Hello to everyone! My wife just bought me a BH Time Ranger for my birthday several weeks ago and so far I am liking this new hobby very much. I have read most of your posts on this forum and am trying to follow the great advice that everyone gives. Other than practicing in the yard, I have been out twice to local fishing lakes to see what I could find on the banks and foot paths. Had no idea how many twist off caps and pull tabs were underfoot! Of course, many smashed or chewed up beer cans as well. I did find 3 pennys.....1970, 1974, and one unreadable. Being new to all of this, I have to say that I even had fun digging up the aluminum junk. As a fisherman myself, I have always been careful to not leave my trash behind but am finding that now I don't mind that others did leave things behind!

I have a question.....we have underground utilities in my neighborhood and I have noticed that there are areas of my yard where my Time Ranger goes nuts beeping constantly. Would this be due to underground electrical wiring?

Welcome to the forum wasp, you're going to be amazed at what people lose or just throw away(trash). Nice machine the Time Ranger, elec. wiring under ground might do that if you pass over it, a lot of trash/targets in that area, large targets. What tones/targets is the unit showing? I don't own a time ranger I own a qd2, so someone with one that does will be better qualified. Hang in there as someone will help you. Great bunch of people here. hh

welcome to the forum wasp. there is plenty of help offered here so dont be too shy to ask even the simplest of questions. i own a bh bounty hunter. basically the most simplest machine ever made. but it does the trick. it can get discouraging at times but dont give up. have fun and HH

.....make any machine go bonkers! welcome. underground utilities are just about the same as overhead electrical lines. cable tv lines sometimes cause interference too. a certain place i wanted to detect not long ago was criss crossed with high voltage lines. it being summer time, my machine would go super crazy there during the day. i waited until night to go back, when there was less demand on the power lines, and the machine[my qd2] handled it a little better. congrats on the finds, keep looking, there's plenty more out there. hh,

Some septic tank covers have the same effect of sending your machine to the moon as well.

Underground utillity wires can reak havock with a detector...they emmit an electromagnetic field that can overpower your detector's receiver...Also underground telephone cables can do this as well...if this is your situation in the majority of your community...it is best to stay clear of the areas you believe to have these barried cables...you may try turning your SENS down low...this may or may not help, depending on the power of the underground lines...Large metal objects, such as manhole covers, septic tank covers, undurground sewage traps, etc. can also make your detector scream for mercy...I have noticed that even with overhead electrical lines, that I cannot get too close to them before the detector starts giving false readings...
