detector for the totally deaf

rotoharr

New member
I ran into a young fellow and his family while i was detecting in the park a while back.
This young guy has been in some sort of accident that has caused some brain damage,
and left him totally deaf.
He seemed really interested in my detector and had some knowledge of gold detecting and beach hunting.
I got thinking that maybe i could modify my old coinmaster6000d with different coloured lights that would work as some form of disc and allow him to detect, but then i thought just trying to grd bal that machine can be a challenge so would probasbly frustrate him.
So here's my question. Is it possibly to mod a detector to work for the totally deaf and what would be a good choice of detectors? I don't have any experience with electronics so would have to get someone to do it for me, or at least walk me through the prcess.

Any help would be appreciated

Hey, Tom...

Vibraprobe used to (still does?) make a vibration unit that plugged right into the headphone jack. Never used one myself, so am not sure how well it works. I can say that I like their pinpointers, though. Best machine to use something like this with? My guess would be something like a Tesoro Sidewinder, or other machine with a nice crisp target response and minimal background noise.

You can buy a vibration unit that plug in instead of headphones. The only U.S. supplier I know of was T.C. Metal Detectors

Find a used Ace 250, and replace the speaker with some sort of low voltage vibrating motor, like they use on a pager or cell phone. The vibe would clue the user in that there is a target and the ID would tell him what it was. Should be a simple mod.

Someone already makes one that plugs into the speaker jack. I just can't remember where I saw it at?

if it were me, I'd rather have one hard wired in. While they were at it, they could rig up a switch so that they could leave the internal speaker and just switch back and forth between the two. A plug in version might be fine, but I dont like anything loose that can get bumped or dislodged if I can avoid it.

My suggestion is for an X-terra70, due to it's versitility.

I think the Threshold has to be set to 0 or close to zero. and also the addition of the little vibrator thingy that goes in the headphone jack.

Another problem I just realized, is it also depends on the type of hunting along with location, and type of machine. All of this is easily overcomed, but work needs to be done to diminish major frustrations that can occur.

A simpler 'beep' machine could be tested or learned with the vibrator thingy attached, to see if targets can be disc'ed out using the disc setting and various targets.

A manual GB machine would require further learning to see if a GB can be achieved with the vibrator thingy attached.

A multi tone machine, well, not sure if the low tones, or the high tones would able to cause a difference in vibration, but I am sure that a circuit could be added to have different vibration patterns for the different tones.

As for lights or LEDs, they need to be of the Super Bright type to work effectively in the day light.

He is deaf and has made many different modifications on many different detectors. Bill is amazing!
