Detector decision.

New to detecting and am looking for my first detector. I live in the Charleston SC area. I'm torn between the Vaquero and the AT Pro. I realize this is a Tesoro board. But any feedback is appreciated.

The vaq is for sure deeper. If you want depth, the vaq.If you want lightweight, the vaq.The vaq is a awesome deep relic and coin detector without any bells or whistles. But have read some good stuff about the pro also_Others that have used both should chime in.Either way you go,you should be good to go. :-V

I think that the decision you have to make is do you want or need a visual display. If you are unsure, then you need to consider weight, cost of accessories you might want later, and try to take a little bit of a long-term view.

Should you get the Vaquero, try to grab yourself a smaller coil too like the 5.75" - it will make trashier sites much easier to work and will probably make learning the detector a much more pleasant experience.

Joe, you might want to even look at the Tesoro Silver Umax since your new to detecting. It's a dandy machine and has a few less knobs to concern yourself with starting out. Alot guys on the forum here make some great finds with it. Use it to get your feet wet then upgrade and keep the Silver as a nice backup or loaner unit. Good Luck and Good Hunting, Mike

Back up detector? The Tesoro Silver

 A dealer in Oklahoma told me that Garrett is having some leakage problems with the AT. He also said that all he sells now is Whites, Tesoro and Minelabs.

Now you are free to compare detectors here on the Metal Detecting forum.

I use the Vaquero and can recomend it.

In addition to the Garrett you might look at the F70. I've been doing research on the Fisher F70 and like what I've seen so far. It apparently can be set up to run as deep as the F75.

If you can stand the weight, a good dual purpose, land and water machine, is a CZ21.

Tabman, I think you may have misunderstood my meaning. I wasn't trying to diminish the value of the Silver. I guess I should stated an "extra" detector to his later purchase of the Vaquero or AT Joe was considering. My thinking was if he started off with the Silver he may actually never want to upgrade. I agree the the Silver is a 5 star unit, "I own one too". In fact let me say I feel Tesoro as a whole is a 5 star outfit :). Mike
