DETECTOR ADVICE NEEDED!!!!!

Get a minelab Excal II. I have one and I love it. It's one of the better set it and go machines on the market. If you have about 1k to spend I have an extra one I bought as a backup and am not using. Pm me for pictures if you like. -Dig

get the BEST detector you can afford to buy and save your loot till you can upgrade to a better one,but get a name brand like whites, fisher, minelab,or garrett not some cheap junk

Go out on the limb and buy yourself a new Excaliber. It will be better than buying a old unit. parts sometimes are hard to find.
I was at Minlab last year and bought a few extra rubber washers between the connector and battery pod and also on the X S @ Pro when it was it for repair I ordered all of the Battery connector's for the 2 akaline Pods Has anyone tried to re -solder the gold ? Plated connectors that wear out on the X S pro

Sometimes a used one will cost you as much as a new one down the road, if it's got hidden problems. I do't think there is a cheap model water machine. At least $900 and up new. Good luck what ever you decide. Just remember a couple of good finds can pay for your machine. Gene

Gene right, If you have a place where there are people in the water, the excal will pay for itself in no time by finding there lost gold and silver. I would suggest Minelab Sovereign if you can's afford the excal...it is not submersible but you can make it water proof with a few modes, and hunt the high to low tide lane....lots of nice stuff there if your on the ruff waters of the ocean's. Watch surfdiggers videos, he hunts alot of wet sand, and does as well as any. And his video's are great learning tools for the rookies and the old Goats as well. Plus get your self a good scoop.......here's a great price on ebay...looks like the Steath...1oo dollars..free shipping..great price............Joe

Always be careful when buying a used water machine. You never know if it had leak problems. Buy from someone on here with a bunch of posts. No self respecting person on here is going to ruin his or her reputation with a lousy sale. But I would recommend the Sovereign also. The Sovereign speaks the same language as the Excalibur.(good for down the road if you choose to upgrade). It will allow you to hunt the tide line. You can get the coil wet. Water hunting takes practice. You need to learn to pinpoint. As stated earlier watch some you tubes on beach hunting. You will get pick up some pointers right off the bat. You will also see that you will need to invest in a good scoop, and headphones.Unless you go water unit then the headphones will come attached. As in every hobby you will see that the accessories add up to be a big chunk of the investment. You might want to think about that initial offer of the Excal. Sounds like a good deal.

YOU MIGHT WANT TO TAKE A LOOK AT DETECTRO PROS WADER ,RIGHT AROUND 500 BUCKS TO YOUR DOOR, EVERYTHINGS IN THE HEAD PHONES. ONE OF THE SPONSERS ON HERE ,MR BILL AT SURFSCANERS.COM CARRIES THEM. IM REAL HAPPY WITH MINE, SWUNG A MINELAB GT PRIOR TO THAT BUT THE WEIGHT WAS A BIG DRAWBACK THE WADER IS A BREEZE TO SWING

Chillyhiker is right, the headhunter wader is a good machine also, but I wouldn't suggest the PI headhunter unless you are very very very good at pin pointing, or don't mind digging a 4 ft round hole trying to find the target. Gene

Having a hard time pinpointing with the 11 inch coil may be true (on the HH PI) but with the 8 inch coil you'll have no problems.

The important thing is start with the best you can buy...so your not wondering if the detector you chose is messing you up and go get out there. You will find stuff if you stick with it. Thats a promise. Beggining is half the battle.

gene edwards is ALWAYS right, bout 6 mos. ago I bought the excal II and it was worth every penny! the II,is the real deal !

For VLF discriminator types:
My first choice is the Excalibur II (even with their bad service record)
Second choice is between the Fisher CZ-20/21 and the White's BeachHunter ID.

For A PI type detector:
Whites Dual Field SurfMaster
Garrett's SeaHunter Mark II
Anchor Electronics Baracuda.

The thing you gotta remember is that a good detector will put money back into your pocket.
It will ... in time ... pay for itself.
If you can not afford a new one then buy a used one.
If it is a good detector you can use it all summer and sell it for what you payed.
You really can not lose anything if you just get out and hunt the beaches.

I have a Fisher CZ-21 - built like a tank and goes deep. Easy to use - 4 tones to listen to: bell tone means you are over a big target like a can or other large target; Low tone means iron; medium tone means pull tab or gold; high tone means silver; and a low/medium or low/high means a good target next to or under iron. About the same price as the Excal, but much easier to use in my opinion. Both are excellent machines. Whichever you purchase you will do great. I do a lot of fresh water hunting so I have the 10.5 inch coil. If I was to hunt salt water beaches and in the ocean, I would probably consider the 8 inch coils since they are easier to swing in the ocean white water. I chest mount mine due to weight of the unit (about 5.5 lbs). It can easily be hip mounted (comes with a hip mount) or on the straight shaft (standard). You will need a good sand an a water scoop. Good luck and enjoy this great hobby!

Heah Rick hows it going? Thanks for the compliment, I'm not sure I'm always right, but I know a fantastic detector when I see it, and the Excal II has proven it's self over and over and again to me. As all has seen on my posts ,I have posted lots of gold and silver over the months all with the Excal II. Now you guys don't get me wrong there are many great detectors, I have a surfmaster PI with the feather weight 10'' coil ,and I do use it on large areas with not so much trash. If there was no trash on any beach, my PI is all I'd use, but as we all know thats not the case, especially in my areas. So the Excal II works fantastic, It can punch through the heavy black sand in all metal and reward me with all kinds of goodies others miss. I wanted a Dual field as a back up, but I'm not sure if I want to swing a 12'' coil for hours, My Good friend wet and dry Or Jeff, from Canada has one, but his arm is as strong as my leg, so it's no big deal to him. Anyway thanks Rick my friend, I would like to meet you some day. Gene

The Excall II is an absolute beast. If there is any way you can afford one get it. They will pay for themselves in no time and you will never regret buying it. Like Ol Beechnut said get yourself a good scoop also. Just my 2 cents. HH :minelab:
