DETECTOR ACTING WEIRD

I was out hunting today and my detector would just go wacko giving signals one after another really fast . I raised it up to the sky and it would continue doing this . i turned it off and started it back up in quickstart and it would continue this for about 4 or 5 min and then settle down. Any opinions ? I was hunting all day for the last two days and still cant seem to find anything good . just the same old clad .My silver signals always seem to turn out to be the twist off lids from juice jars .

Maybe your iron mask was not turned on!!! Might check that. wmike

try turning down the Sensitivity or go from manual to semi auto and see if it will make a difference. I think mine will aslo do this at time and I found that going from manual to semi auto or the other way around will make a difference, if not I will turn down the sensitivity a little.
Good luck
Rick

was detecting behind an old college once and was running sens. about 24 manual. i got to a small area and my detector went wild to. droped the sens.and it settled down.seems when i left that area i was able to start turning the sens back up. may be it was trash or i was picking up some other interference. stan sjmdc

Try turning your sens. down in areas where the Explorer goes wacko. You are probably getting some electric interference from an underground power line or high a power transmitter of some sort nearby.

It could be a microwave source. As to the ironmask comment. You are either running in ironmask or you are not.It has no effect as to digital or disc.detection modes..hh cs

thanks for the suggestions I will try turning down the sensitivity.

If it was interference - then perhaps you should have tried the Noise Cancel - wonder if you considered that and tried it ?

sometimes when I put XS in iron mode it starts cycling noise and just keeps going over and over , is this interference?

I did try that and it didnt help .also when that happens I see the curser on the screen running all over the place . On one occasion I was in a field away from all power lines . It also likes to do it when I switch back from pinpoint with the probe. The hardest thing I find is that when I do find a deep signal I cannot find it a second time or pinpoint it .

When it does it again, firmly give it a slap on the back of the housing.I know of someone quite popular on these forums that has to love tap his detector every so often. And I was out the other day and I had a couple of spots mine was just going nuts. When I got home I turned it on and noticed that the light was flickering kind of in sync with the weird sounds and the cursor jumping around everywhere.I turned the light on and there was none.I slapped the back and the light came on and it seemed to quiet down.
I am pretty sure that this is caused by a lose plug-in that attaches to the circuit board.
I haven't been out since then to see how it acts, yet.

Thanks Ric I will try that next time I get out .hoping to try to get out tomorrow morning .

I think you should return your detector for warranty and tell them specifically what problems you are experiencing.
I had experienced very similar problems when I first bought my detector and believe me that what ever you personally attempt to do to fix this problrm will only be short term fix. Minelabs are very understanding and will help you.
