Detecting ................

New member
Detecting has in some sense become more difficult............ When I say this I don't mean harder to swing the coil unless of course your machine weighs a ton..
but by..... The shear changes in detecting equipment and YES " Bells & Whistles" ....

Some Bells and Whistles as they have in the past been called were just that.. " Bells & Whistles" selling hypes to move more detectors. Now I'm not so sure..Bells & Whistles maybe should be renamed to

"Detecting Enhancements" Of which plenty surely work well. So I state again, "it's become harder".. Which machine do you buy.. ?? It's harder to decide. Basic beep, and dig. Or a full fledged tell you the size, the depth
The iron content by beep elimination ,or ID and iron break.. Very dependable Target Id's on many machines.. on and on...........

Do you spend $200 dollars or $2500.00 hundred dollars.. I can't say for sure..It will depend on your research, what you like, what you want to do in detecting.. A Hobby a few hours a week. A way of life like some do ... Using the latest technology or using the old school beep and dig it.. The choice will be yours and mine in the end.. But it is harder to make that choice now..

So what ever you decide, or have already decided. Good luck in the hobby..and please keep an open mind as to the new stuff on the market. The Old way may just be that.. still fun, but not as productive as it could be.. Or.....as productive as you want it to be using the older tried, and true detectors.. It's your choice..... Yes it's harder to decide....

No right or wrong ..............

I still like my old beep and dig detectors. I have used Tesoro for a very long time. I tried others. I just could not make the switch to something else. For what I do, my detectors work just fine for me. I know what it is telling me when I get a beep. I just have a good time when I am out... KEN. Ind.

Well I have used a MXT for about 14 years, and think it is one of the best and simple detectors to use. I have a new Racer that will be here at the end of the week and if the Racer don,t do me as good as my MXT then I am going to order me a new MXT and sell all my other detectors, "I have 9 now " and just stay with the one and forget about all this new detectors that will go 20% deeper. If they all went 20% deeper than the next then we should be getting coins 3' deep. I have tried about all of the USA detectors that has been made in the last 20 years and some older. This is it, not going to even think about another detector. I am 63 years old and a new MXT will last longer than me. Good Luck to all that want to try all the new things. flintstone

There you go Ken..Your enjoying what you have,,and have fun doing it.. Hobby detecting at it's best..

Well Flint if the average is about 6 to 8" like many claim ..............the math says about 1.2 to 1.5 inch improvement..Not that much difference really..
I think the new enhancement is separation of targets ........... and depth may have reached the limits on present day detectors..

It all depends on where you hunt, just like the real estate, location is first, equipment is down on the list below operator savvy. My 2¢

I think along how Hombre does. It's how deep the Hunter is, more so than the machine. I personally can get deeper coins on some days then others with the same machine. If there are surface / shallow coins abounding the "Happy Feet fever" will take hold. On the other hand, if shallow targets are sparse, it's time to slow down and grunt. Brother and I just hunted a ball field yesterday. He is no slouch with his 250 Ace. I had an AT Pro. Surface targets were almost non existent. I out hunted him this hunt mainly cause he was impatient. These deeper coins were down around 5-5.5 inches. I could tell he wasn't on his game, I dug 9 nickels to his 1. I was in the right mood with a nickel grabbing machine.

An improvement of 1.5 inches is not a quantum leap in depth but it could mean the difference between walking over a target or throwing the target in the keeper pouch.

Yep, good target separation is the name of the game at least in the pounded corroded nail/bolt/screw/nut infested parks around here. Use a small coil in these areas? Most remaining oldies around here are deep, some real deep. And a larger deeper seeking coil typically runs into serious separation problems in junk dense areas.
No telling how many deep oldies were walked over with iron under, over or next to them in some of these old parks.

We are in the computer age where mail is sent in micro seconds, space probes taking video of the Mars landscape, men walking on the moon, digital flat screen television, GPS, etc. and yet all these decades later, state of the art consumer detector technology still cannot conclusively differentiate iron from silver with near or at 100% accuracy.

I think you're right, all these detector companies have done is increased depth and added some flashy bells and whistles.

Hobbies that require the use of Equipment and tools attract Tool and equipment guys. Show me a tool guy with only one Cordless drill, or one hammer, or one screw driver.. Yes it is kind of hard to know which company to go with.. but in the end, it's all a matter of budget and obsessiveness and how easy you are sucked into the market hype. Also hanging out at forums fuels this need to have something more or perceived "Better". The guys using a 10 year old or older machine, don't frequent the forums or have very good will power! ;-)
I don't.. started a year and a half ago and am up to 4 MD.. Now if I could just bring the hoarder inside me to sell one of the XLTs!

Hi Elton, I believe you got a new Racer didn,t you? How are you doing with it ? Is it as good as they say in trash ? I have some old parks that is so much trash that you can hunt with a pin pointer and do just about as good using a detector. I have a old yard that a friend and I have pull 16 silver dimes out of and I know it must of been a party house with all the beer cans and pull tabs. If I can get through them I know there is more.We have not pulled a quarter yet, what is with that? I would think that there should be some there. Got tons of Wheat's and not many nickles. flintstone

Each of us approaches this hobby with different attitudes, interests, capabilities and expectations. For me, I started off with an old Whites heavy 'blue box' detector which I was thrilled with at the time!! As far as an enhanced detector, I'm still waiting for the metal detector that will ONLY indicate gold under my coil and ignore everything else especially those evil pull tabs!!!. I would be likewise thrilled with a detector like that!

It's a difference between "wants" and "needs". I have everything I "need" to display the same looking pics everyone else does. Coins, rings, artifacts. A loaner, a turn on and go and a "everything possible bell and whistles". My LRP exceeds the abilities of all my past units listed. So for a grand total of $650 in 3 detectors, I have all I "need" and "want". And a short road for a "profitable" hobby.
