:detecting: Wireless X-Terra 70

Hi All,
There was a post on the GPAA forum that started me on this.
I believe it's been brought up here, but I thought I'd share insight and Radio Shack, Part Numbers.
First, I cannot stand the earphones designed for this industry. This is just me, but in hot weather
I cannot stand to wear them. I wanted to try different, lighter weight phones.

The adapter RS - PN 2740876 goes ffrom 1/8 to 1/4 inch (3.5mm to RCA). The adapter is gold plated
and most important STEREO and $5.49. After I got these home I put it in the X-70 and plugged
in several different brands of headphones and they all worked.

That's part of the story. I recall reading (maybe here) about someone using RS wireless earphones.
RS only makes one that is rechargeable. PN 3301253 $59.99. The transmitter has the 3.5 mm jack
so the above adapter is needed. They have a volume control and are absolutely great. They work
excellent on the X-70 and make digging so very easy. No need to be concerned about tangling headphone
cords, or removing the phones. They fit behind the neck and have very comfy ear supports, this means
you can wear your sun hat. I used them to watch a movie and forgot they were there. Very comfy.

The only drawback I can see is in the batteries. Both the phones and the sender have built in rechargeables.
They last for 7 or so hours, but they must be recharged with 120V house current. Making a detecting
camping trip difficult unless you've got a generator.

I had tried that det and it did not work on mine. I bet I bought the wrong adaptor! Thanks for the pictures and part numbers, Beale.

Thanks for the info ive been looking also for the light pair of light weight earphones. im going to give them a try

hh to all

I've had mine for two years and finally had problems with them. Last two times I went out, I could only get the sound on the right side earcuff only. You could wiggle the toggle switch, put a slight forward pressure and they would work fine, release the pressure and the sound on the left earcuff would stop. The toggle switch finally came loose and that was the end of that. I guess $30 a year is not too bad but I'm looking at something else, maybe a bluetooth that will be better built, won't buy the RS again. HH John

I've had the RS unit going on 2 years and they still work fine. I would recommend that anybody purchasing this setup also purchase the RS warranty. I think the warranty costs about $10. Cheap insurance.

I had that same set up a couple of years ago on my ace 250. They have nicad batteries and they finally got to where they would work about 1.5 hours. The first year they were great. Also the swivel plug wears the wires through. After repairing them a couple of times I went with my old corded phones. Do I wish all detector companies would build in wireless on detectors.

How long is the insurance good for? Should of bought it. Thanks, John

I believe it's for one year. I think it's worth it but, if something happens you'll have to send the ubit in to RS. The local RS won't handle it.

I think the key to those Ni-Cads is to follow the instructions in the package (fine print) that says to fully discharge the batteries before re-charging. That's old technology for batteries, but has to be done to eliminate the possibility of memory, which reduces the duration of the charges.

After detecting, I leave mine on until the L.E.D.'s go out on the sender and the headphones, then wait about an hour for them to cool and recharge until the charger light goes green. The batteries last about 6 or more hours after re-charging these days.

I notice the headphone battery goes out first if I wear them until they are drained. The sender takes longer to die.

Works great. I've been using those headphones for about a year now.

There is a wireless set called airheadzwireless dot com , especially made for detectors.

I called them and got a recording. However, they did return my call but I had left the house. The lady left a message and said that they would be out of the office until the 29th of this month.

started acting up big time. Went hunting yesterday and 3 hours into the hunt my detector started acting crazy. thought I was in some kind of interference area, depth on a quarter got down to 2". I was already making plans to send in my machine to get it repaired. I checked the GB and batteries and everything was ok, when I pressed the pinpoint it would start skipping and not hitting right. Got home and checked my machine in the yard and it worked flawlessly, hooked up my phones, problem was back. Hooked up my Troy phones, worked great. Must be the batteries in the phones, I had charged them the day before and always get about 6 hours but even then, they have never acted up this way when the batts were low. Think I'll go back to my Troy phones but I'm like you, I can't stand them when it's hot ourside, gives me a headache. HH John
