Detecting the Outer Banks, NC

Mosley

New member
I plan to vacation at the Outer Banks NC in a few weeks. I have written to and been told by the Government authorities in Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head that metal detecting is legal on their beaches.
This will be my first beach hunt. Has anyone else detected there?
Any tips, areas, etc. would be appreciated.

Did they cite for you an actual rule that specfically says "no metal detecting"? If not, you may have been a victim of "no one cared, till you asked" psychology. Ie.: they morph something else (disturbing sandcrabs, etc...) to apply to your "pressing question".. I may be wrong, and there may be an actual specific rule, at these particular beaches. But more often than not, if you go asking deskbound bureacrats, you risk a "no", when ..... perhaps it's common place, and no one really cares (unless you're being a total nuisance in some other way).

I was there last spring. I'm "pretty sure" its legal, check the Nags head official site. However they have been doing beach replenishment and I assume that means they brought in new sand, probably burying anything good. I did not take a detector with me, my cousin was supposed to bring his but he forgot it.

My wife and I honeymooned at OBX in May of 2011. Unfortunately I was unable to bring my detector! Boo! The public areas sure looked good though, I think you may have some luck finding modern coins/jewelry. Make sure you stay off (metal detecting) the Hatteras National Seashore area, It's my understanding that it's closed to detecting. Sorry I cannot provide any further tips for metal detecting, but if your looking for a good hot dog, go to Captain Franks. Wow, great steamed shrimp and hot dogs that were out of this world. Maybe I was just hungry that day, but the meal was just what I wanted.

Have a great time...and let us know if you find any treasure!

I don't have any input about this but Can I go with you??

And I don't think it would be a good idea to take a metal detector on a HONEYMOON.... :argue:

Webcam at Jenettes peir just at the south end of Nags Head. When we were here I talked to one guy metal detecting but he was just going out. Also I was watching this about a month ago and saw a guy metal detecting but I didnt see him do any digging.

As they stated hunting is legal except inside the national seashore. Last summer I hunted south of there on Atlantic beach. Nice area. Good luck
