Has anybody ever seen or heard of a metal detecting business? I was at my local grocery store and as you enter and leave you walk past a huge wall where people put stuff for sale and computer repairs, lost and found fliers. Then I had a thought. I was wondering if anybody thinks they could make any money doing this on the weekends???

I was thinking, just make a flier that asks if they ever lost a ring or keys or anything that they want recovered. And if you don

I think you would be better off contacting insurance companies in your area, and offering them your service. When a client turns in a claim for a lost item the insurance company could contact you and for a "fee" have you search the area where the item was lost. Just a thought

You know I thought about that too, but if the insurance co. already paid for the claim, or if something was never insured. Im sure people would still want to retreve there lost item. I am mostly thinking of elderly people, that might of lost a ring back in the day. Im sure its the same everywhere, but when the seniors moved in back in the 30's and 40's, they never moved.

You should ask a minamal of say $20.00/hr + milieage. make it worth your while. I get several calls a year, and charge about $20.00....found or not. I have done some work for insurance companies.....for example, I was hired to look for a Rolex watch in a farmers field. That got me about $200.00. I never did find the watch either. If it's a poor person, I won't charge at all.

You must have seen my post for my card and it got your brain working. It is a way to make some extra money. Some people do ask for a percentage of the value, some charge a minimum (2 hours), some an hourly plus mileage. For you 2 newbies, you need to get some swing time in first. You need to have some good items you have found to show you can find the treasure / lost items if it is there. Me, I go with the minimum. find it or not. I'm not going to go look for something on my time with hundreds of $$$ worth of equipment for nothing.

yea, I like you cards too, Yea, your right, need more notches on my shalaylee first, but I was just throwing it out there. I bet there is a lot of goodies in the backyards of the bungalows in SWEET HOME CHICAGO!!!

I wouldn't put "if its metal i will find it" because what if someone already dug it up?
you might get into some trouble with the person paying you to find it.

I can find your lost ring or jewelry using the latest state of the art metal detecting equipment. I recently returned a man's wedding band that had been lost at his swim club for about 10 weeks. I may be able to do the same for you!

No Recovery, No Fee.

You would probably make more money by giving Metal Detecting classes.
You could show them how to do MDing the CORRECT way and how to cover
the holes when they are finished!!!!!!

Some of the fellows posting their cards should give you some ideas..Personally charging set fees and the like is not a good idea as even if I get a smile or hug after I find an heirloom or expensive piece of jewelry the challenge is worth it to me and indeed am sure in most cases a monetary reward will be offered if you wish to take..Lets not forget it may lead to some nice hunting ground for some old coins and many old yards are virgin...

That is why I put No recovery, No Fee. It gives me the opportunity to ask questions. One question I ask is "how old is the house". You see where I am going with this? If it is an older home, I may say I will do it for no charge, but there is a catch!

the reason i did that post 7 post ago was,
if someone lost a gold ring or whatever in a stream or a park near there house 2 years ago maybe during those 2 years someone might have already found
what your trying to find. so the you're looking for like two hours and you can't find the ring! thats a waist of two hours and the
customer might think your stalling so you can get more money.
I don't know its just a thought.

Other group of people that sometimes needs to know the location of metal is the pest controllers, specially those that do subterranean termite work. They have to make many holes inside homes to inject the pesticide and in some cases there is a possibility of damaging water pipes (or other kinds of installations) in the floor or walls. There is also a risk of getting electrocuted if the driller touches a cable.
