Detecting in the Surf

New member
I am having problems using my sovereign GT in the water at the beach. Any help would be appreciated new to this hobby. Find a lot in the wet sand just not much in the surf.

Should, it's just like an E-Cal
Don't get that box wet, or you'll never her a signal,
Be careful, I had a friend doing the surf like that with his Sovereign,
and a wave blind sided him, and down he went, machine and all

what is a ecal? i only go into the water about a foot deep. i understand about not getting the box wet .

you need to find holes in the surf area, or on the slope on a sand bar, that is the place, if you find trash you will find the good stuff. Best for you to get a water detector and not risk yours.

Hi Bret4, I am an advid water-hunter!! My personal recommendation is if you are only going to hunt in around 1ft. of water, then you can stay with the Sov-GT. But, be VEERY MINDFUL of ROGUE WAVES!! They can RUIN your detector, thus ruinging your day!! If you want to hunt in water ABOVE a FOOT DEEP, then I would personally recommend the MINELAB EXCAL or a FISHER CZ-21, because they are TOTALLY WATERPROOF!! But, before you put out that Extra MONEY for one of them, BE SURE YOU WANT TO WATER-HUNT!! Because you will also have to spend another $100 or more for a Long-handled WATER SCOOP, and I would personally recommend a Stainless Steel Long-handle Scoop for LONGEVITY!! I use both of those detectors, but you will also need an After Market STRAIGHT SHAFT for your MINELAB EXCAL, which will cost you around another $100 or more. With the MINELAB EXCAL, you will be ALOT MORE FAMILIAR
with TONES & NULLS, and that would be a PERSONAL ADVANTAGE over the FISHER CZ-21. Try to find someone with an EXCAL, that you can go water-hunting with, and try it out, before you decide!! BEST OF LUCK, hope this helps, hh, Les Robinson

A Minelab Excalibur is the only thing I can recommend. Easy to use, pretty light (changed the shaft on mine to a straight shaft easier on my arm) and does well in the black and bad sand.I used Garrett and Tesoro and I have found more in 6 or so months using this machine than I found in four years with the others.
