Detecting in the North during winter

Circle C Digger

New member
I will be traveling to Vail, Colorado late January for a week. Not sure if I should even consider bringing my metal detector. What is the drawback to winter detecting? The ground to hard or the snow to deep? Living in the deep South, snow and cold weather is not an issue.

By that time the ground there would probably be to hard to dig in. Perhaps someone will chime in on it but I am pretty certain it will be under snow and rock hard in that area.

not only will the ground be so hard it would take major explosives to scatch it, the main reason vail exisits and people go there in Jan. Is because the snow gets many feet deep there.

C.C.Digger the transition to the weather is going to be a major shock its cooooold up here so be prepared with good cold weather gear.Another suggestion go to the hardest gravel lot in your area and go metal detecting this will get you familiar with ground conditions. You need good clothing that wicks well. There are a few who detect in the winter most of us are like bears play it smart and hibernate until spring.Good Luck Ron
