detecting in bear country

Hello all, I am a new MXT owner, living in alaska, I have been out of detecting for awhile. but am excited to be getting back into it. Does anyone have an idea how I can control volume on the MXT short of wearing headphones, my concern is some of the high pitches from detector sounds like a predator call, my old detector is a coinmaster 6000/DI Pro and it had a volume control.
went out yesterday but ground is still frozen but did get some interesting signals but were deep. I also purchased a 10X12 SEF coil, and am trying to decide what smaller coil would be the best for trashy areas. I am a relic hunter at heart but live in gold country to and sounds like MXT is a decent gold detector also. I will have to dig out some of my old finds and post, maybe get some help identifying them.
Thanks and I am enjoying reading posts on the Forum.

Hey Steve welcome aboard. Since the MXT has no volume control I'm afraid you'll have to use headphones to have the option of lowering the volume. I have a pair of Jimmy Sierra Maxi-phone ll's that come with a noise limiting switch which I couldn't live without and a feature I highly recommend. If you're afraid of predators sneaking up on you while you have them on, you can also purchase one-cup earphones ( the "rattler" ) so you can leave one ear free to hear for signs of danger. Although I haven't tried one yet, the 10x12 has gotten some great reviews ( one on White's main forum right now ). The 5.3 appears to usually be the coil of choice for many experienced hunters in the trash although I have found the 6x10 DD to work very good for me also. It works even better in highly-mineralized ground which I hear you have plenty of up there. For gold I've read that the 4x6DD is your best bet. Hope that helps and good luck.

Well, if I were in your shoes, I'd be wearing the single cup ear phones with my 44 magnum on my hip. Might never need it, but it might be critical at some point.

Hi Steve and welcome aboard the MXT forum. You've got yourself one nice machine, but sorry to say you won't be able to control the volume without headphones. I have the SunRay Pro Gold headphones and wouldn't part for any other. The nice leather ear pads are very comfortable and won't slip around. It's got the volume knobs and also has a limiter switch. Very nice. Many people like different smaller coils for different reasons. If you do a search in the archives, you'll come up with many suggestions. I wish you luck and may the thaw be with you! You have an excellent detector for coin and relic hunting as well as nugget shooting.

I'd opt for a 5.3 Eclipse coil for most hunting needs. This 6
