Detecting gold

I have a Pioneer 505 which I think is a quite good machine with all of the functions that seem necessary and few frills I don't mostly depend on. I've been invited to Cali to a gold hunt. This will be nuggets, small of course, because as it's explained to me - MD's don't pick up gold dust unless there's a tee total ton of it. My question is - does the Pioneer 505 have a chance with such a target? Does anyone have any experience with it? The Pioneer 505 is about like a Sharpshooter II. Thanks and happy holidays to everybody!!

with the 4" coil i will work depending how small the nuggets are, gold machines work at higher frequencies and are more sensitive to small nuggets, you could test your machine on small fishing sinkers to get an idea on how it will work for gold

Hi I've found nuggets with the Tracker IV, the depth and sensitivity are pretty much the same in both machines. Even with the 4" coil the nuggets will need to be well over half a gram, flat surface area and shallow (within 2" of the surface) for the machine to detect them. That being said, if you work very slowly and medthodically you might come home with some color! I've found a 1 gram nugget with the standard 8" coil as well, about 1" to 2" deep. If you can afford an older second hand VLF such as the Minelab XT17000 or XT18000, then you would improve your chances a hundred fold. They can be purchased for as little as $350 AUD. As for testing your 505 you will need to test in mineralised ground to get a definative answer,Hope you find the gold regardless of the machine, best of luck HH, regards Nugget.:ausflag::)

I would try and hire a proper gold detector and take the 505 just in case you hit a trashy area where there may be gold. Some of the best PI (Pulse Induction) detectors struggle in areas with lots of trash because of there poor discrimination capabilities where your 505 would do quite well. Gold prospecting isn't easy so you want to give yourself the best chance possible. I wish you all the best and look forward to see how you went on the trip.
Cheers!

Hi Rennie, short answer yes but with a lot of limitations. Live your dreams! HH regards Nugget.:detecting:

Where I am at in Texas we do not have any gold that I know of. About a 100 to 150 miles from here there is some in the San Saba area where James Bowie's lost mine is supposed and also on the Llano River.
