Detecting gold in NC & SC

Have never hunted there but from what I have read there is very little detecting size gold there.

but with the newer machines there may be some large enough for one to pick up, Lots of fine

to small flake size. My guess is that you will spend a LOT of time between beeps ( for gold that is )

but as the old saying go's, never going is never knowing. Something like a Fisher Gold Bug ll

VHF would my choice, it's made to find very small gold. There are others that would work also

Whites has some , as do Garrett. HH & GL.

The problem with north carolina is not finding gold it's the fact that it's either on private property or in a national forest were you can only pan or sluice which means no metal detecting or no motorized equipment, I have been prospecting & metal detecting since 1978 and found my first picker nugget in the western part of the state, my first large nugget also came from that area ( 1.25oz)but all that came from private property with permission which is very hard to get, I eventually ended up with a 200 acre claim near Manley Hot Springs Alaska where I didn't have to ask anybody for permission and I coud dredge, sluice, pan and metal detect to my hearts content. There is plenty of gold in north carolna but getting to it is the problem, Jimmy (US Navy 1965-71)

Thanks guys for all the info, but I'm trying to find someone to possible hunt with , but I really do appreciate all the info .

What part of NC are you in . I'm in the charlotte area . I'd like to go but I don't get a lot of time to . I've been panning at Thermal city gold mine . I've got a little bit of panning equipment . Maybe we can find someplace to hunt or pan .

I have some pics of gold I found in N.Carolina & Alaska that are made into jewelry, these and more are on ebay under "epoxitex" seller

hawgdawg,
Try going North on Hwy 16 in Lincoln county. Go toward Newton Conover. When you pass Hwy 150 continue on past Little Mtn which will be on your left. When you come down the mtn. on the North side you will cross over a small bridge. Turn Right before crossing over the bridge. On both side of the creek it looks like Bomb craters everywhere. Hunt bank or creek. I hunted the area 30 yrs ago and had great luck. I now live in SC in the North West corner where SC, Ga and NC meet. I'm in what is called the Golden corner of SC. By the way, when I was hunting there no one cared. HH

I am thinking maybe it is a question of risk versus return  Anybody know what the fine is for getting caught in a National Forest with a detector? Seriously though there must be some places where we can detect and pan without getting hauled to jail. Thanks for the information so far everyone. SC/NC gold area is only little over 3 hours from where I live in Summerville the VW is going on a road trip year. Fresh batteries and a big honking DD HF coil on my e-terra, look out. Oh, don't forget the pan and slush. Can't wait to see what the price tag is going to be for the new Minelab. Anyone want to go prospecting in SC/NC area hit me up.
