Detecting for gold

I have a few questions what is the diffrence between the x-terra 70 and 705 in prospecting mode? Is their a depth diffrence, computer difrence, or anything? What bout iron how dose these machines turn out iron and hot rocks is their a tone diffrnece or anything? Thanks jess

Hi Jess,

In my opinion there is is very little difference between an X-Terra 70 and the 705 when it comes to depth and sensitivity. You do get the ground tracking offset in the 705, but that does not amount to much if anything. Basically the same detector as far as I am concerned. In Prospect Mode you get the Iron Mask feature to help with ferrous trash but it has never been very effective for me. The Prospect Mode is a very powerful all metal mode though - one of the best.

do both detectors have iron mask? I know i here nothing but good things bout them detectors, and really want to upgrade from my gold bug se which just don't do it for me. What about the eureka gold?

Hi James. Had Terra once, no they don't quite handle the hot ground as good as an MXT. The sat on the Terra is set and seems slow in the real hot ground, gets noisy and moans a lot.
The sat control on the MXT takes care of most of that. The Terra is a touch more sensitive though but the MXT handles more ground types easier. In quiet ground the Terra is a little in front but as it gets worse the gap lessens to that of being behind in the hotter stuff. In quiet ground chuck on the MXT 5.3 coil, its a hot little coil on gold and brings the sens real real close to the Terra. Supposed to be a coin coil but its dynamite on gold.

Yes, both X-Terra 70 and 705 have iron mask.

Owners manual page 22 "In Prospecting Mode, the objective is to find targets in mineralised,

There is the option of going to lower frequency coils with the X-Terra which should handle bad ground better. It would also lose sensitivity on smaller gold but in theory at least might help looking for large nuggets in bad ground. In the milder ground I hunt there is little difference between a 705 and an MXT.

thanks steve i was asking cause i am currently working on a deal for a xterra 70 with 2 coils and the 10.5 in elypical coil and just wanted to know.

I had a 705. I didnt like it much, way too noisy. I did some prospecting with it and didnt find anything. The iron mask feature didnt seem to work at all. I got an old Gold master 2 and went back to the same place and found 5 nuggets. Thats not to say the 705 wouldent have found them, but I had better luck with the GM2.

Thanks Smigo. I had heard that coil was good for gold on the MXT but never understood why it would be better than the small DD coils. The ground would probably have to be pretty hot for the DD coils to have an advantage, I'm guessing.
