HAD A PHONE CALL LAST NIGHT FROM A LADY SAYING SHE HAD LOST AN OLD & VALUABLE RING &
COULD I HELP HER BY DETECTING. SOOOO I WAS AT THE DESTINATION JUST AFTER 8AM & MY
FIRST THOUGHTS ON ARRIVAL WERE "MY GOD, I DON'T HAVE MUCH CHANCE OF FINDING ANYTHING HERE!!"
YEP, JUNK EVERYWHERE BUT DECIDED TO TRY.....I NOW HAVE A LOVELY NEW COLLECTION OF BEER TOPS!!
WHEN I ARRIVED THE LADY WAS SURE IT WOULD BE IN THE CHOOK PEN BUT THEN DECIDED IT COULD BE
HERE OR THERE, GARDENS,PADDOCKS, SHEDS,BACKYARD,FRONTYARD,DRIVEWAY!!
WELL I DID TRULY TRY FOR 5 HOURS BUT THEN THE LADY TOLD ME SHE THINKS SHE LOST IT IN TOWN
SHOPPING A FEW WEEKS AGO!!!!!..GUESS WHO GAVE UP & CAME HOME!!

IT PAYS TO HAVE A GOOD SENSE OF HUMOUR!!!!!...... . I'M LUCKY I DO!!

CHEERS,
KATH

Last year same situation, except when she lost a broach the house was being re-roofed. The roofers had ripped all the shingles off and threw them into the front yard where she said she had lost it. Then being a tidy bunch, after loading the old shingles into a truck, they raked all the aluminum nails into the woods at the side of the yard. It is amazing how well the HF elliptical responds to aluminum nails.

Same deal, after 3 hours, she says, "well maybe I lost it in town". I drove home and ripped the top off a cold one.:drinking: But we gotta try, and your good deed will be repaid at some point & in some way! You're a good egg for giving it a go, so just think of it as Terra practice time.:detecting:

Even though I have searched for many a lost gold ring and even found one in a soccer field(lots of area) they never seem to turn up where they say they lost even if in a smaller yard..Probably the first place to look is in the cars front seat and area and after that bring out the detector..One of my more interesting finds was in a foot of snow after a lady shoveled and that was a several thousand dollar diamond ring nowhere near where she said she lost it. Probably my funniest non find was a lady that had a large dog and after two hours in a small yard I scanned the dogs belly and got a good foil reading indicative of a nice gold ring..called me several days later and the dog passed some large foil...Always a challenge but a good talk before the detector comes out can save you a lot of time and energy especially if she may have lost in a ten mile area...By the way probably found 75 percent of the rings I looked for and along the way got some new hunting area so its all part of the hobby...

A different take.... Same approach lady lost wedding set while spreading straw on a new lawn.. New development in Virginia.

Hunted for hours where she said she lost rings( She was positive) felt them come off.

Decided to check larger area.Well now, found one in the back yard 60 feet from where she lost them. Found the other one in the side yard.30 feet from where she lost them. By the time rings were found lady had left for the day..Gave rings to her husband... He grunted something and went in the house.

I am still waiting ( 4 years) for a simple thank you.

I was glad to have found the rings, but it would have also been nice to have had a thank you!!! Oh well.

Hi ... I read your wedding ring find for those people? People will always let you down, but God never will. I have found this to be true. Your reward will be in Heaven, not here on earth. You did a good deed... God knows it. Way to go.... you did something most would never even think of doing. Some day they might say 'thank you', but know you are touching others with that story and maybe, just maybe, someone else will do the same for another woman that loses her wedding rings. Smile knowing "she' was happy when she came home.

Relative the expensive diamond ring in the snow...As I did it for a favor for a bowling league members friend after two hours in freezing weather in the snow..a week later he handed me an envelope with $11.00 in it with a simple note saying I should get at least minimum wage..I simply wrote a simple Thank You would have been better and returned the envelope..A note to be considered now I always asked is the ring insured and has a claim been submitted..Seems like some of these people are double dippers, get the ring returned along with insurance money and yes insurance companies pay a finders fee for those not aware...
I sure enjoy the challenge but being scammed by one of these people leaves a bad taste in my mouth...

Sounds like the sort of thing that happens to me. My first real good ring I found was a white gold mans ring. "You beauty" I say to the misses as I hold it up to admire. Two minutes later a young guy rocks up begging me to help him find his lost ring that his girlfriend gave him recently. He then describes it perfectly and exactly where he lost it and I found it. Still, it was a buzz to see the look on his face when I simply opened my hand and gave it to him.

You make a nice point..Thank You !

Hi All, what fantastic experiences I read of, amazing...nice to know I am not alone!

Yes a simple thankyou is ALL I ask. Also this lady did say she was putting in
for insurance claim & also taking a photo to police in case someone handed it in TOWN!!

Well one thing for sure is I would NEVER have thought of running the detector over the dogs
Belly!!...This lady had three german shepards..hmmm maybe I SHOULD go & do it!! lol

Hope we hear of others experiences, to me it is a REAL eye=opener & also adds to the
wonders of detecting.......fancy detecting in SNOW!!!!...can't imagine it..same as I can't
see me out in the water chest deep!!!...would love to see someone detecting like that!
Have only ever seen one person detecting in water here in W.A. & that water was shallow.
Guess some do but never seen it!...Not having any luck working the beaches so MUST have
LOTS to learn for the beaches...practise makes perfect they say....I am sure I shall enjoy this new side of
detecting..when I learn the XT 70 fully...as when I can get out looking for gold the family
have a job getting me home!! ONLY heat & flies force me out.
Anyone here from MONTANA?? ....Our daughter & hubby..an AMERICAN....lived there
for a few years..now live in W.A.
Cheers,
Kath

Hi Nuggetykath68.
Here are a few things that you have to have your wits about you in the water when i started out in the water in 1979 at that time my mate and i new nothing but it didin't take long to learn that the sea is a cruel sea and you do have to make the right moves when things happen like having a very large turtle surface just a bit from you have a look and take off, or been knocked off your feet with a very large wave, walking into the edge of a rip. Some days it is a mill pond and is magical to be in their but other things happen like this picture of my mate lucky my mate had his camera could it be a shark most probally it was. Regards Pinpointa.

CONVINCED ME TO KEEP IN THE SHALLOW!!!!!! WHAT A GREAT PHOTO THAT IS.

IT MUST BE HARD SCOOPING IS IT NOT? THE HOLE MUST FILL IN SOOO
FAST SO GUESSING IF YOU DON'T GET THE OBJECT FIRST TIME, YOU
COULD BE IN THE ONE SPOT FOR AGES??

OFF SOUTH IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS SO HOPING MIGHT DIG SOME
TREASURES WHILE THERE. HAD CHECKED OUT AREA WHERE THE
EARLY SETTLERS WERE HOPING TO DETECT THERE BUT THE PLACE
IS SO OVERGROWN, VERY THICK SCRUB & TREES....MY PARENTS
HAD TOLD ME OF THINGS THEY & OTHERS HAD LOST LIVING IN
THE SPARSE CONDITIONS. LOTS OF OLD OVERGROWN SCHOOL
SITES & HOPING I CAN GET TO AN OLD TENNIS COURT...ALSO A BEACH
OR TWO....MIND YOU WE ARE HELPING FINISH OF A HOUSE, SHIFTING
FAMILY INTO HOUSE,AMERICAN FAMILY ARRIVING, XMAS ETC BUT
I SHALL SEE! BUSY TIME FOR EVERYONE!..ANY HINTS ON HOW I
SHOULD TUNE THE X T 70 FOR BEACH PLEASE?? ALL ITEMS I HAVE
BURIED I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FIND,FIRST I WALKED AWAY BEFORE
DETECTING! SO FAR I AM FINDING
IT MUCH EASIER DETECTING FOR GOLD OR ON LAND!!

CHEERS,
KATH

You know what you say about something good will happen to you if you help others, well I was on the beach and a young bloke came up and asked me if I could look for his mobile phone, yep , you guessed it, 500mtrs up the beach, now thats a long way when your 65, fat ,old and knacked. whats in it for me I asked him, and got the big shrug.Any money up there, and it's mine, ok, your on he says. 10mins later when I stagger up there, and get his friends to move all there gear and go over the area, someone says, what are looking for,the young bloke says, me phone,OH, I put it in my bag so it wouldn't get lost. AAAAAAHHHHH! The good bit was that I found $7, right where they were sitting, It helped the saw feet and aching back

Hi Hungry,
Well you are only a lad at 65 you are only as young as you feel. I am 70 just about and i will put in a good day and just keep swinging. I just feel if i have not got the beepa in my hand something is missing. If i find a place is very productive i will run string lines accross one way then the other direction then at 45 % working all different angles till i clean it out.
Regards Pinpointa.:ausflag:

I have similar experiences myself. I was detecting the wading pool (salt) in Wynnum one morning about 6 oclock. I had just finished a 12 hr detecting session at Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast, the tide was out and I was detecting the bottom which is sand. I was approached by a council worker who said that an English tourist had lost his custom made wedding ring the day before, The tide was coming in and he was keeping the gates closed so I could detect it. After about 35 to 40 min, he said he could only give me another 10 min or the gates would burst. The tourist turned up and his wife showed me her ring which was the same as the husbands ring only smaller. I was doing the last sweep and they had thanked me and were walking away. About three paces further on I found it, it was only about 4" to 6" deep. I yelled out that I had found it and they returned quickly. I always carry electronic scales so I weighed it on the spot, it was 18k and weighed 8.55 grams. It was a beauty, and would have cost a lot. A quick thank you and off they went, I had found about $20 in coins so they must have thought that was reward enough for 45 min work. I have tracked people down at my own expense to return lost security keys, mobile phones, and when they get the items back all you get is thanks, mostly or look at you like you have 2 heads. I have been on 5 callouts in the last year and have had 100% success, Some of the owners give you a reward, some don't. I detect full time now, between the goldfields (yes I find nuggets) the beaches, sand parks, and have recently purchased an Infinium LS. I have just completed my open water SCUBA course and have done 2 solo detecting dives for a bit of pocket money, but this will change with experience. Thanks for reading, God bless, Nugget.:detecting:

Thats a funny story.thanks for sharing

thats why i feel so young my young wife keeps me on my toes thats why im always feeling 21 again well i have to. Regards Pinpointa.

Excalibur is one of the best and would not recommend using a land detector even for shallow water..Do remember its hard work and would equate one hour in the water to several on land..Perhaps an expensive investment but most water hunters usually pay for their detector once they find the good spots not clobbered by many..One nice diamond ring in the scoop would probably pay for it in one scoop...A nice sturdy long handled scoop is recommended, takes a while to learn pinpointing in water as its just different and above all eat your Wheaties as you will need the boost...
Years ago did a lot of it in fresh water, but my diabetic legs just won't take the strain and the cold water which inpairs blood flow to the legs...
