:detecting:Ever wanted To Know About Search Coils? Here's A Great Coil Explanation On Coil Sizes And Types:detecting:

Where's the section that explains why the AT Pro coil falses the way it does when it bumps something or is scuffed along the ground, or when changing direction abruptly ? ......I missed that part !!.....Jim

Jim, it sounds like you have something wrong with your coil. Mine doesn't act like that. Although, I have had similar problems in the past with other detectors. Skip

I don't scuff my coils ,or bump em or swing and change direction erratically ,or swing like a wildman, mabe thats why my coils look and act fine ?

For the name "Woodchuck " I woud think that you hunted the woods !!.....So you're telling me that the woods around you has no sapplings. or twigs, or any other debri that your coil bumps into ? ...... and I guess that you don't run your coil very close to the ground , ocassionally bumping it ? ......f this is the case , then you're the guy I need to follow after to get the deeper finds ......

Very educational post. I really like the imaging coil information. I hear mentioned about the GTI series being old technology, but I still have my buddies using brand x detectors and some using other Garrett detectors, asking me to check their find before they dig to see what my GTI 1500 says. I'll more times than not say " well it sounds good, but it's bigger than a coin and its x inches deep". Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe there are any other detectors out there with the capability to tell you the size of an object and the true depth of the object no matter if it is coin size or not? These GTI's may not be perfect for every type of hunting, but they are sure fun when coinshooting. There is nothing better than swinging that 1500 and hearing that sweet belltone, then pushing the pinpoint button and seeing a B sized target at 5 inches deep! When Garrett updates and improves on the GTI series, I'll be first in line. As Dire Straits sings in Money for Nothing "I love my MTV" well "I love my GTI"

The Ace 150 does the same thing. I read in another forum that securing the wire lead from the coil tightly to the shaft helps minimize this problem. I did this using electricians tape, and it did seem to help, but not completely eliminate the problem. The difference was quite noticeable though. Next hunt I'll secure the wire further up the shaft, and see if that does the trick. I found that just rapidly wiggling the lead will give a false tone. I also have falsing in wet sand while beach hunting, when the coil strikes the sand. I'm wondering if this is not an EMI problem due to static electricity. Bumping a wet clump of grass does the same thing when I'm not on the beach. As a newbie, the wet grass was very confusing that first time out until I figured out it was the dew covered grass. Try the tape, or for a more "professional" look, maybe some tywraps. Let us know if it makes a difference for you...
