Detecting creeks?

I had a friend that bought some property close to Shiloh. Lick creek runs through it. I was wondering if you guys think I would have any luck hunting in the creek itself?

It would be better to give it a try than not to. Lot of good relics have been found in creeks and usually come out in good condition. Just get one of those scoops with all the holes like the ones the beach coin hunters use. It will make retrieving the target a lot easier. HH

I think it's worth a try. It's mostly rock/gravel bottomed and it has steep banks so I'm sure it's not changed course in awhile . Lick Creek runs through the battlefield and it I'm sure it was used as a water source so I think it could have potential. Just never heard of much creek hunting.

Want to see some of the goodies you can find in creeks? THis is a VHS recording from 1988 in Vicksburg I did. We didn't have GoPro or cell cams. I had to tote this huge RCA vhs recorder in the pack along with my gear. Please excuse the crudeness as it is 1988 and its 26 years ago.Dan got a US Buckle,Dave got a 30lb Chill and I got the US boxplate. We hunted it more and found alot more but I didn't take the recorder. I had been detecting for about 7 years before this so I was just a moderate rookie.hahahaha

Great place to look. Soldiers needed water . Acquachigger on youtube is the master of creeks. Check out his vids. Good luck and post your finds. CCH

You said that the creek had steep sides. Have you walked along the creek in the battlefield area to see if there was a crossing? There are some helpful posts on here about getting access to free historical maps at www.usgs.gov. You can go there and poke around, or, check out the MAPS forum here on FINDS. Ask for help, if you don't find the info that you need. An older topo map from say 1927 or 1935, etc, may have FORD written on the map of Lick Creek. You may be able to determine elevations, and other interesting info from one of those maps.

Back in the '70's, I posed my then girlfriend on a cannon at Shiloh. Very original, huh? :)

Good luck to you. Should be a great hunt.

There are several copies of the OFFICIAL RECORDS OF THE WAR OF REBELLION online, including this one at CORNELL UNIVERISITY.

http://ebooks.library.cornell.edu/m/moawar/waro.html

Browse through the index of volumes, then, you can read, or, download a pdf of that volume. Look for operations in Tennessee, or, SHILOH by name.

There will be official reports and communications from Confederate and Union officers, to and from their Commanders. Might help you discern more about the battlefield and Lick Creek, which COULD have had a different name back then.

Good luck

Awesome video, I'm still finding a lot of relics at vicksburg

That brings back some great memories. We hunted in some jungle conditions. I was 50 pounds lighter, 27 years younger, and wearing hippy hair. Some awesome relics came out of that creek.

I loved the video
