Detecting baseball fields

Treasure Nut

New member
I live close to a large park that has around 10 baseball fields. I know there is a very good possiblity that jewellery can be found in each of these baseball fields. I've never detected these fields before.

While walking my dog, I came upon talking to a couple gentlemen that came early for their games. I asked what the possiblity is to find lost jewellery after these games. Their response is that every team that comes to play in this park are already required to take off their jewels at home before coming to the games, reason being that if someone just lost their ring it would disrupt the whole game trying to find this individuals jewellery. Well, that didn't give me much confidence to find any jewellery in these fields.

What are your thoughts on this? Am I wasting my time to detect these fields?

Maybe there would be the odd coin from a pocket now and then. The only way you'll really know if it's worth the effort is to give it a try, just like any other site.

I tried several fields here in Bronx/NY (not Yankee Stadium yet!).

Waste of time. $0.27 per field.

Footbal and soccer fields are sweeter (juicier). $2.11 per field on average!!!

Especially when rain starts unexpectedely! Often they leave behind their balls (soccer balls), goal posts, goal nets, ice chests, score boards!

I've found quite a few gold rings over the years on ballfields where the girls, and sometimes women, play softball, and several on the fields where boys play baseball and men play softball, but there's no requirement that jewelry has to be removed before games. Except for a couple, all the rings I've found on baseball and softball fields were found in the outfield. The 10 kt initial ring in the photo was found the last time I hunted on a ballfield. It came from a baseball field where girls summer league softball teams practices, just outside the leftfield foul line about halfway between third base and the outfield fence.

These are one of my favorite places to detect, but these are the older ones with some not used for years. Many of these have given me class rings and some older silver coins. In one older one i got a 1888 Dog tax(when it was called Dakota Territory and 1 year before we were a state) from ND and was able to trade it for a 1886 $5 gold piece. we also found several barber dimes and some IH pennies too.
Now the newer ones seem to not have as much in them as everyone seems to be wearing uniforms and do take off their jewelry. Some of the better spot in the old Fields I find are the outfields as everyone seem to detect the base lines and pitcher mounds.

If you are coin hunting ball fields i think it helps to check out the fields history .high school fields depends on, i think whether or not the the teams over the years where worth a crap .
i have detected a ball field in my home town . over the years they have had several championships and alot of play off games .found alot of coins plus two liberty nickles 1960-1961. no rings . at the park i went to there is a hill behind home plate ,i have seen alot of people lieing down to watch the games .i dont know about you but all my change ends up in the sofa when i lay down .(better teams and games means more people .)

Yup, you're right! You never know until you sweep a coil over the ground. But the gravel parking lots for these fields should produce some interesting finds. :detecting:

A lot of people will tell you things like that: "nah, you won't find anything here. We're real careful about NOT loosing things. No one here has jewelry or money, etc... And if we did, the other kids would turn it in to the lost and found..." etc...

And even if it were TRUE that a particular team was required to remove all jewelry before playing, that's just that one set of field users. There's a lot of other users of the field at other times, right? I've found gold and silver jewelry at baseball fields before. I suppose if I were to ask the little league coach: "Do your kids loose jewelry out here?", he'd probably say "No, they take it off before they play" or whatever.

The perceptions of people who've never metal detected before are odd. They can't image valuables being in the ground like that. You know ... like "CERTAINLY there can't be any valuable jewelry losses. Because of course persons would search and search if they knew they'd lost something, until it was found.", or "of COURSE people remove their valuable jewelry and bracelets before playing beach volleyball, throwing frisbees, etc..., right?" The non-md'r just has no concept.

I use the Whites BIG FOOT with my XL-Pro a good combo, MickFin,

I try to find a spot along each foul line where spectators would sit/lay and watch, many of these fields are used by a group of friends playing ball and drinking so expect some pop tops. I also look for shade trees close by where folks would gather watch and chat. We have public parks with many ballfields here.

Thanks for all your thoughts on this. You all had some very good points.

Yeah, I do have a lot of beer bottle caps :rage: to contend with. Will give it a shot and hope to have something worthwhile to post.

I suspect that each Ball Club has their own rules. Some say "take off your jewlery and leave it home." Others couldn't give a care.
I've found rings on baseball fields and lots of clad. Won't know until you try.
