:detecting: ATpro recovery speed test.:detecting:

Been playing with my new toy. I decided to see how fast the recovery was at rejecting a nail and then hitting a quarter. I used one 3 inch square nail that has a little rust on it. I also used a 2 inch square nail that was encased with rust. I was able to reject the nails at a setting of 35 iron disc. (I think this is why the default iron rejection is 35) No sound at all on the nails. I then placed the big nail about 12 inches from the quarter. I took several swings and silent on the nail and it hit the quarter as expected. I closed the gap to 6 inches. Same results. I closed the gap to 2 inches. Same results with proper coin ID. I slid the nail up to the quarter. Same results! I then pushed the other nail up next to the quarter from the other side. Same results with proper ID! I even could wiggle the coil right over the quarter with proper ID and no iron grunts. I then put the quarter over and under the nail and like expected it hit the quarter with a higher numeric ID. All signals say dig me. This test was with iron audio off, 4 bars of power, pro zero custom mode. Test performed on my basement floor that has no rebar. So for fun I placed 3 nails with quarters in between each one. All targets 4 inches apart. I swept my coil over and you could hear every good hit clearly. I thought what the heck so I swung the coil very fast and without hesitation they all sang out. Even with the iron audio on you could here the high tones. Man this machine is special. The early so called software problems with the iron audio was only user error. My lower rod doesn't have a wiggle and I don't get the falsing when the coil shakes either. That could have been that the coil connector wasn't all the way tight? For the ones that canceled their orders early have really missed out on something special.

Don't forget to try the nail lengthwise across the top of the coin, pretty much every detector will signal iron, the difference with the AT is it will give a double low tone, so knowing this if you come across this audio response in the field just sweep the target at 90 degrees you will either get a good signal or just an iron tone again so you will know whether to walk away or dig.

Personally I would be careful about using any null disc in amongst iron as it usually means adding another filter process internally, audio disc is fine though as I feel this will not slow the machine down, I am talking generally here as I have not tested the AT for response differences in both these setups back to back.

I own a lot of detectors and the one I am hunting with the most is the AT. It is a really sweet detector even if it was not waterproof add that and nothing out there can come close for the cash you will spend to buy one. It will ID targets with proper ID in the dirt as deep as any thing out there.

something wrong with your machine.....

Seriously though you ought to feel lucky to have one that don't..

lot's of peoples do it..

have not heard anything on the iron audio software problem... what was that?

good testing...it's fun....

the At-Pro is quick for it's price point...is it the quickest? no.... but it's got great audio and a great price....I too have ran it through some scenario's ...I reserve my thought's for now till I see if the coil issue is random and can be fixed...

If your's is not doing the falsing on the wiggle maybe they are just sporadic one's with the issue and if you think it's fast in iron ? do you think it's the coil making it so?

would like to know...I like to test detector's and if you see something that blow's your hair back in recovery speed maybe it's just as simple as that just a coil issue...

would like to know if it's just the coil issue at this point...

Thanks for any input..

Keith, I went and tried the wiggle thing. Mine did not do it. But I noticed I had the sens at 3 bars. So I upped it and it did false while wiggling. I have a shaft lock coming soon and I'll try that and let you know.

Do it in zero disc and turn the nail long ways and use a small target.

With the nail longways 2 inches from a copper cent.it like the other machines just sees the nail with a double beep. This is why it's important to cover a productive site in at least two directions.

Kenny, did you happen to do your tests with higher levels of gain (above 4 and even up to :geek: and if so, did you notice that being a help or a hindrance around detectability and ID's in the scenarios you simulated?

Keith,

My experience with Garrett machines is that they tend to false when over-driven. They are not like First Texas machines that can be run at max sensitivity (I currently use the Omega), and remain stable in low EMI environments. Also, the Garrett coils are very sensitive, and are not to be scrubbed on the surface...this is sure to cause falsing...my GTI is like that...I always operate it an inch or two above the surface for better performance (image/ID accuracy and no falsing).. I rarely will operate the GTI over factory default sensitivity...diminishing returns in my mind, and this may be true on the AT Pro as well.

There very well could be an issue with the coil shield paint on early production models that Nasa Tom mentions on his site. Garrett has had problems with coils in the past (the early 12.5 imaging coils failed in cold temps - I had two that failed, but Garrett addressed this).

Have you contacted Garrett about your concerns? I'm sure they would listen to your observations, and respond directly to your concerns. If the falsing is a defect, they certainly will address it.

Honestly don't put much value to the results as basically a nail laying in the ground for 50-100 years is certainly going to give you different results as the nail will rust and leach into the ground creating a halo and the same goes for copper coins although silver leaching is not as prevalent but does have a minor affect. Keep the testing and input coming as its sure appreciated by many thinking of a Spring purchase..

good going, Mickfin

wear did you get the Extision 4R the arm??? Mickfin

Honestly I would need dynamite myself and a tip of the hat for your input as with new units testing observations and the like will make an excellent unit even better as Garrett builds a good unit and stands behind it..Personally I have a test garden planted for over 20 years with different variations which gives me ballpark info..Yep I watched all of Garretts videos also to give me a running start. Again no perfect unit just one that understands its concepts and uses them to his or her advantage.

I had noticed you only mentioned a power level of "4" in your post so that's why I wondered. I know that on in ground targets, with masking occurring, too much power can be counterproductive at times which is also why I asked.

Yeah in my test kit I have a big, rusty nail, six inches long and about three - eights of an inch in diameter, that I'll run that test with. It's true that nail out of the ground will read much differently than in the ground - with its rust halo intact..
