Detecting a dirt basement?

Has anyone had any luck detecting a basement of a house where the ground still exposed. I've got an opportunity to detect the basement of a large home built in the 1850's. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck with something like that.

I had the chance to detect an older house with half the basement being dirt. I gave it a good going over and found nothing of value. Checked the stone walls also. You just never know. I thought for sure there would have been something other than nails and junk. Good luck with yours.

I never hunted one but from stories I have read, they are great places to hunt. Keep us posted.

I am aware of two dirt basements locally that had gold coins buried beneath them. The homeowners were pretty sure they were there, but not sure of the exact spot. I participated in one of the digs after some had already been found, but was'nt lucky enough to find more.

i like Rick in Pa, had little luck in an 1840 estate dirt floor basement. Perhaps it had already been done- but of course I couldnt think of a place Id be more excited to hunt. Watch your head, nails and cinders o plenty down in that dirt, couldn't figure out what was throwing that machine for a huge loop- I wondered if there was concrete with rebar, way down deep there. Get down there and give a good go. That's the only way you'll know for sure.

Sounds like a great project. In Karl Von Mueller's book he mentioned an old timer that found hidden money that everybody else had missed. He found it using a ultraviolet light to see if the area in question had some disturbed soil. It might look the same to the naked eye, but under uv light it showed up and he walked away with a nice cache. I can't remember if it was Treasure Hunter's Manual # 6 or # 7. If you are not familiar with uv lights, be careful. They come in longwave and shortwave and you have to wear goggles with the shortwave to protect your eyes. Don't shine them in anybody's eyes.

I got to hunt a grand trunk railroad station last winter i didn't get much, my buddy got to rail road tags and hidden in well you might as well called partialy sealed off was a few whisky bottle 1880's style ladies leg neck style plus scanded the rock foundation too, keep the faith you just never know

Update... About a year late, it was tricky to find anything w/ metal pipes. Around.
I found these grate - like ornate objects in the same old basement. Owners says I can have em. Think they are worth anything?

You may want to advertise them as somebody may want them for a house restoration or as movie props . Back in the day many cool things dropped thru those grates .

Lots of masking going on in old basements with dirt floors. Lots of iron and bits of metal, wire pieces and who knows what.

As you know, if the house is wired and powered up it can interfere with your detectors abilities. Older homes had plank flooring without tongue and grooves. There were spaces between the floorboards. If a coin was dropped and rolled, many times falling through to the basement floor, never to be found.

Over the years, many owners of older historic homes had their cellar floors lowered, digging out the old dirt (tons of it) and actually spreading it on their property. Any treasures went along for the ride.

In the next week or so I have a job of shoring up a floor of a home that goes back into the early 1800's. Its a crawlspace (yuk) but I will be packing my detector. The homeowner has stated that her family has lived there for generations. I hope to find something that will be of some meaning to her past.

If you have the time and patience, remove the masking culprits, you may be in for a find of a lifetime.

Stab around in the corners with a thin metal prod of some sort for loose or yeilding dirt...if you hit what feels strange, even a buried board, dig it up...might be a treasure buried below it...

Years ago I somewhat assisted in the recovery of an old, well-sealed, fuse style junction box buried in a dirt basement under the house of an elderly couple that had recently passed which they had been using to secure their life savings.

With my guidance it was located by one of the couple
