I wonder why the one I found has such a small half loop in the middle?
That's really cool! I wonder if it was for a draft horse before they had tractors? This farm goes back close to 1800.

I do not know the difference between a work harness bit and a riding bit but someone here with more knowledge will most likely have that answer. Best I could say is this is a riding bit from my limited experience 32+ years ago. I know what my grandfather called a barker bit for young horses was jointed in the middle and I think if memory serves me correctly that the better trained the horse is the less height the U shape in the center needs to be for riding. Hopefully someone with better knowledge can give you a better answer.
