Design your own??...

Is there anybody out there who designs or builds their own detectors as a hobby? Are there any web sites or books on this?
I know this would not be easy for many, cause electronic circuitry is rather involved. But wouldn't it be nice to make your own coil, or to modify and test different designs? Or change the knob setup to your likes?? etc..
Maybe crazy, but just a thought. Any input??

Carl Moreland has a forum that deals with building and modifying detectors. It's at the link below.
