Depth ?

I think a lot will depend on how well you know your Sovereign to get the max depth. On the S8 I have seen some very deep coins picked up with this coil, but these are not your classic lock on signals with tone and meter ID where someone new to the Sovereign or don't understand it would walk right over. These are signals the coil will pick up as a slight tone that will increase in tone when doing the Sovereign wiggle, but the tones and meter reading will or will quite make it to the correct ones, but sure is trying. I have a guy that knows his Sovereign well and borrowed the S8 and went over a area he and others worked hard before and picked out 4 mercs at 10-11 inches deep that were very weak signals.
If you know your Sovereign then I would pick the S8, if you are new to it I would pick the 8 inch coinsearch if you could find one. One coil I never tired in the 8 inch is the new 8 inch Tornado coil used on the Elite and GTs and will work on any of the Sovereigns. I was told this coil is more sensitive than the 8 BBS coil and lighter weight too.
