depth with xt 70

butterbox

New member
Just got hold of an x terra 70 with stock coil,,i did not find anything deeper than 1 inch and when i did hit on something and scraped the dirt in a heap of approx 2 inches deep no signal, this was out the back paddock no ground mineralisation, tried all types of settings after watching videos and learning from this forum, mainly had it set on all metals mode ,i have used a cheap goldsnoop out there and i was getting a lot more signals and at depth. what am i doing wrong with the 70.

I'd have to say after using mine since the first of the year to just turn it on and noise cancel it then ground balance it and go to detecting to just start learning it to begin with. Turn the sensitivity up to probably 20 and if it doesn't crackle and such head to a park to find some clad. I would start out with 2 maybe 3 tones and use pattern # 1 for beginning. If you get good solid tones while walking around a found target, dig it. I can see after all my studying where it can be a very steep learning curve for a good while. The more time you spend with it the better you will get. Also I cannot express enough, watch the DVD and watch the DVD and did I say watch the DVD:happy:Also I would not worry so much with the target ID numbers so much just yet. Listen and then verify what it might be with the numbers but dig it anyway. Right now I would recommend not hearing the iron/ferrous tones as they will confuse you if you are a newbie like me. I've become very comfortable with mine and have learned to believe it virtually 100%. It's a joy to me to use the pinpoint on this machine per it is dead on all the time for me. Like I said I've got almost 6 months on mine and if there is anything out there better than peanut butter and jelly I haven't tried it yet. As a newby myself I can't see with my limited knowledge of this great sport how it can get any better. Good luck and let the machine teach you. Time is the teacher with the X 70.

If you properly noise cancelled, ground balanced, turned up the sensitivity in the mid to upper 20's and are getting less than 8-10 inches on a quarter in the C/T mode.................there is something wrong with your X-70. If there is and you bought it new, take it to the dealer you got it from and see if he can provide you with one that works. If you bought it used, contact the person you bought it from and tell him just what you told us. Something just ain't right. JMHO HH Randy

You know Randy up until I read many times how you recommend to noise cancel the 70 I was just going through the motions. When I followed the proper way as your posts said the targets just started jumping out of the ground then. One thing I can recommend to butterbox is to get used to being on your knees and digging..........This machine will wear the bluejean knees out:clapping:...................Randy thanks for all the great info you and the others have posted here. Lots of knowledge to be shared!

Those basic steps Digger mentioned are so important and sometimes overlooked. Did you get a manual when you bought the machine?

yes i have got a manual, i have upped the sensitivity, and seemed to be getting a lot deeper also a lot of the readings are now all over the place on one hit it read 20,22,-6,20,46,-8,8,20,22,46 etc etc etc

Basically your unit could be malfunctioning or could be hunan error,,,My XT-70 easily got 8-10 inches on a quarter but on pinpoint about an inch or two so its at Minelab now for repair...imagine a club member or perhaps a local dealer could help on the human error but to me sounds like it needs a trip to the shop for evaluation..Lets face it even out of the box a new unit could be malfunctioning and could hunt forever and never get any depth and if human error perhaps a local XT user could help you out...I personally talked to a Minelab tech and in minutes he gave me instructions to send the unit in for evaluation and that might be an option also. Waiting every day for the brown truck as the season is getting shorter every day in Pa...

Dan---That's why we ALL need an excellent backup detector (or 2).---Helps keep the manufacturers in business to.--Economic stimulus for 'em. right?? -----Hope you get it back SOON!!!-----Del

Hi Digger,
Thanks for the information regarding the x-terra 70 depth. What coil size and coil frequency do you use to detect a clad at 8-10" in the C/T mode? I am air testing less than that using the stock concentric coil and retentivity turned up all the way, ground balanced, etc.

Thanks!
Swayne

Butterbox what i would do is bury a few coins, air test them first, then bury and record the depth of each one. I dont know where you live or what numbers the coins will give but US coins will pretty much set the same numbers all the time. Quarter is 42, dime 38, penny @34, nickle can be 10-16. Junk, rusted iron, scrap can make the numbers jump around. I dont always go by the #'s, what i look for is a solid repeatable signal, in both directions. I to am fairly new to the 70, its an awesome machine. Read up on the information in the faqfaq area, lots of info there. Good luck, hope this helps. Happy hunting. Surfman.
