how deep do i reasonably dig with the vaquero once i have located a target ? yesterday i hit a target ,soft whisper of promice, i started to dig, five minutes ,i'm a cubit down and still heading south, not knowing much chinese i was hovering in indision whether to press on ,or give it a miss . when lo and behold a 1950 sixpence appeared at the bottom of the tunnel i was digging to china. having learnt how to gb,i wonder ,is it a must that you go into super tune before you start to hunt or is it mostly for gold detectoring . i have found it to give a clearer signal on a faint responce but could be the start of another digging task to find what i hope isn't a bottle top.the fellow from down under ,blowfly, kilkis,hh.

blowfly - This is the way I look at it. Never quit when you hit a whisper target - or any other target for that matter. If you have to get a 12 foot ladder to slide down into the hole and hire your cousin to stand at the top and carry buckets out with a rope - do it! Other wise you'll wonder the rest of your life - did I leave something valuble down there?

I was in a city park yesterday and was swinging my coil out around this hollow tree, [which was about 2 feet in diameter] and was picking up a faint hit. I put the coil onto the tree and lo and behold it got louder. Well, got my thinker going, [which by the way doesn't work too good anymore] and decided it must be a heavy wire or cable that was put on the tree years ago and probably grew over the culprit leaving it invisable. There was a slit about 8 feet high on the tree, so I reached into the hollow and bent my wrist to the right and pulled out a metal container about 12 inches tall by 2 inches wide. Inside was a note that it was hidden there for purposes of a global positioning exercise. By the way, I own a Tesoro Vaquero also. I could pick up the metal tube all the way around that hollow tree, which I felt was pretty good detecting power.

I placed the container back inside the tree and started to walk away, stopped and decided to go back, remove the container and check the tree again. Having done so, I discovered another signal on the East side of the tree, only. I reached inside the slit and dug out who knows how many years of leaves and an old cigarette pack. I pushed my pin pointer inside - as far as I could reach and got a signal. Now my cubit probably isn't as long as yours, and could not pull any more trash. From what I can remember, a cubit is the length between the middle finger and ones elbow. Anyway, there is some dead wood - about 9 inches on the East side in the hollow close to the ground. I could saw it out and reach in farther, but, it's on city property - in a park - I can't do that! I'll have to figure out something but I'm not giving up even if it's a large piece of tin foil that I come up with. Then I can invite some of my heathen relatives over and they can feast on some real swearing - never give up! Dimesworth

thank you dimesworth for you for your good words ,i will continue to carry on the aussie tradition and be a good little digger in name only i'm 6 ft 6 ins tall. i threw the cubit in to get some head scratching going over there.after reading some of the posts and replies on the forum ,i thought i'd stir the possum a bit .fair dinkum mate.blowfly kilkis

I have had deep targets just disapear, but kept on digging. I've dug 36 cal pistol bullets at 10-11 inches, sometimes when I take a plug out the signal would totaly disapear, and I would go deeper and find the target. Apparently by removing the top 6-8 inches of soil it would not get as strong of a signal...must work better throughwet ground than air... The soft deep hits seem to always be the most productive.

hi crazy ed thanks for the responce unlike you ,i'm still operating in the sandy beach's here in far north queensland, australia ,mainly because i haven't figured out how to retrieve a target from the pristine lawns around here, with out getting run out of town by the council workers.i've poked, probed, used phillips and flat screw drivers, knives and garden trowels and none of them seem to work well.so i'm not game to work in the parks or maybe a new pamana canal is in the making. blowfly kilkis
