depth with 17" coil

relic605

New member
I just bought a new CTX 3030 with the promotion of the 17" coil. On Memorial Day AM, I took it to a local CW battle site that was pretty much searched out. In a small area I dug 4 Sharps bullets, 1 Burnside, and 1 round lead ball, and the targets were 12 to 16 inches in the ground, with fairly strong signals while using the 17" coil. I had previously searched it with an Explorer II, and it looks like it will now pay to re-search my old sites!

I got one for the beach too, but I haven't had the opportunity to use it yet.

The 17" is a depth demon on coins and relics if not to much trash and covers a lot of ground in a hurry . It also will often help pull a lot of on edge coins from hard hit sites . Just be forewarned that a 8" dime on edge can pinpoint off up to 8" and be tough to recover because of this .

I hunt mostly old fields and expansive lawns. My silver count is way up with the 17" Coil. My hunting buddy has a CZ3D that he is very good with but his biggest coil is 10.5 inches. I can cover at least 3 times more ground in the same amount of time. My silver finds are 7 to 1 compared to him. I had a 10" deep 1918 Mercury Dime that I knew was silver before I dug it, I had him come over and run his coil over it, as we often do when we think the target is a good one. He had no problem picking it up with the CZ3D, in fact his CZ was tuned by you know who, so he can probably get deeper than me with the CTX . The coverage of the 17" coil is unsurpassed. As they say, the only way you'll get my 17 " coil is to pry it from my cold dead hands.

The depth on 17 inch coil in my opinion don't seem any better than the standard 11 coil. The only advantage I can see on the 17 inch coil is extra coverage , on larger targets like tin cans and pots of coins size the big coil will search deeper.

With the benefit of extra coverage and depth, is there a particular program that is 'modified' or created especially for the 17" coil? I just got one so I was wondering if anyone had 'discovered' something unique that could be shared.

Thanks

There are no secret programs that magically unlock abilities. Run it with as little descrimination as possible, as high on sensitivity as possible, and the other settings based on your local conditions and desires. There is nothing that needs to be changed when you change coils unless you have to adjust the sens slightly.

Good point, I had this happen to me today. I went out with my new CTX today and equipped the 17in onto it. I've noticed that in moderately clean to clean sites the 17in does indeed get better depth and seems to separate just as good as the 11in. However like you mentioned the depth reading on screen can be inaccurate at times. I found the depth to mostly be accurate but at times, especially with coins on edge, it could be up to 4in off for me in both directions.

Seeing how that's the only disadvantage I've noticed so far I'll probably continue to run the 17in unless I'm moving into a more trash laden area.

I haven't used my 17" much (that's one heavy pup). I have a Detector Buddy but the 17" seems to be a bit too heavy for it.The Detector Buddy works well with the standard 11". I'm thinking about the Pro Swing but I've pretty much used up my detector budget this year with the purchase of the CTX. For the time being, I'm still blown away with the CTX with the 11".

Keep em swingin,
Mark

I use the Pro Swing and when set up properly it feels like the CTX with the 17" coil is floating in air. I can hunt all day. You can not compare the Pro Swing to other systems. It is in a league of its own. Get one you will not regret it.

There is a lot of debate as to if the 17 inch coil goes deeper on coins. I can't see any improvement my self but who knows - I may be wrong. When hunting for larger targets like a hoard of coins the 17 inch coil will give extra depth for sure. I can't pinpoint well at all on a single coin with the 17 inch coil bolted on. Still I think the 6 inch coil is a better buy.....

I hunt with Relic605. He has no problem digging a foot or 2 in the ground for a relic. I get tired just watching him sometimes, and he has a nice collection of stuff to show for his efforts. If I weren't so lazy, I'd have a 3030 too! For now, I'll stick with a machine that doesn't make me dig as deep. :detecting:

My current use for the 17 inch coil is for more recent drops in parks and school yards. I set my sensitivity at around 4 or 5. As many have pointed out, it can be challenging when pin pointing. The technique I use is to first locate a likely target and then out with my Pro Pointer which I basically rub on the ground side to side until I locate the target or if I can't, then I know it is either a very small piece of iron etc, or very deep, in which case, I pass it by until I come back with the 11 inch which inch coil, which is easier to pin point with.

I have sometimes at odds as to why I pin point with the 17 inch, but when I check what I think is the spot, it ends up being several inches if not further from where I thought the coin was.

Dwayne2010 What I do with all coils is find the hot spots on them my 11 is in front of center and behind center I don't have a 17 but I bet it's not in the center where most people think . sube

I use an Ames drain spade shovel that works very well on the deep holes. You just have to carry the shovel over your left shoulder so the metal on the shovel doesn't interfere with the detector.

Heck of a long drive from Enid to any salt water beach. If you bought it for beach hunting you have more playing funds than me.
Let us know how it works.
Just funning.
