Depth reading question

WVAdirtdigger

New member
I tried to use the depth gauge on my EXII to figure out how deep my targets were but it never seemed to be very accurate. I'm used to my 3D and it is accurate down to 7" depth on a coin. What should I be doing to get an accurate depth reading. Remember, I only have about 9 hrs on the machine so far.

Thanks,
Dave

The depth reading on the Explorer is a "rough estimate". I go by shallow, medium, and deep based on how much black there is in the depth window and by the sound intensity. I also use the gain at a setting of 5 or less to get some idea of depth. If Deep is on it will pretty much negate having the gain set to 5 or less to help with depth. I think with any detector you begin to get a feel and also the coil can be raised above the ground but unfortunately depth reading is not a strong point of the Explorer.

That's pretty much what I was figuring. For such a great machine, you would have thought a good depth reading would have been part of it.

that is the depth meter on the Explorer is full time in disc mode, no switching to AM to get the info, if you like no slowing down just dig or keep going based on instant info. I like it, no it is not as accurate as single frq. units but who cares if it is 2 inches off or not? I am still going to dig whether it's 2,6,8 or whatever if I like what I am hearing. The single frq units will also not read accurate if the target is not coin sized.

Try to think of each one of these bars as the depth and usually the item will be within close proximity.

First bar close to the surface

Second bar shows objects 2"-6" from the surface

Third bar shows objects 6" and beyond

As Cody points out Close... medium... or deep...
:)

Dave,

The target must be under the center of the coil for the best depth reading. Therefore, pinpoint accurately to get a more accurate depth reading. Even then, shallow targets tend to indicate more deeply than they really are. Beyond mid scale the depth reading seems to be somewhat more accurate.

In my opinion this is critical information. Failure to use pinpoint is something I am don't understand. However, if a user does not want to use it then so be it.

and real close to what I was finding. I'm used to using the depth reading to decide how deep I'm going to chase a target. If I got 2" past the reading and the probe didn't say it was in the walls of the hole, I knew it was a big deep target and I stopped digging. I don't care to dig to China to recover a RR spike. Once was enough. I am really liking the Exp so far. It seems to have better depth than my 3D.
