Depth Reading on 705

I have been noticing that the depth readings on my 705 are far deeper than the actual target. Has anyone else experienced this? What factors might affect the depth readings?

hey chuck...I notice it if the target is right on top(clad penny or other clad coin). Depth will read 12 inches when in reality its right on top for the naked eye to see. I find this no biggy. Usually when i pin point it, the pin point tone goes wild so as to tell me a surface coin. Is this what ya kinda experience? Emmett

Not exactly Emmett. I am referring to a target that is buried and the depth reading is deeper than the actual target. For example, I got a good quarter signal that was 10"-12" but when I pulled the plug, it was in the center of the plug no deeper than 3" or 4" inches. This has happened quite frequently lately.

Size of coin, moisture of ground, adjacent targets, etc etc etc... many things can effect depth reading. Best to always dig a bit deeper than what you think it might be. Way to many variables.

Remember too that the depth measurement is from the coil in relation to the target. If your coil is 4" above the ground, that is part of the measurement. I doubt your coil would be that high, but for illustration purposes, something 2" deep in the ground would show up as 6" deep.

Thanks TJHoosier,
That's another point that I never took into consideration. I guess that when you look at all of the factors, my machine is functioning properly.

You are correct. The X-TERRA determines the "depth" by the characteristics of the target's return signal. For example, a quarter has a larger surface area than a dime. So a dime flat at 6 inches will not read the same as a quarter flat at 6 inches. When you consider the manual says one arrow = approximately 0 - 2 inches, and five arrows = 10 inches, it is obvious you could experience quite a variation between the depth readings of various coins. Thanks Randy,
Your review of the Minelab info. made me realize that I was taking the depth reading much to literally.
