depth read out

I am very new at using the AT pro, still learning the setting. I hunted a few ours today & got confused on my first target. I was sweeping the coil over what turned to be an old plow & was getting a depth reading of 6-8 inches, when I pin pointed the target it depth reading was only 2 inches. It was not at 2 inches but about 8 inches. Why the different depth readings.

Eric is correct with his explanation. Metal detectors are designed to give the best probability for depth and discrimination on coin sized objects. Often times you can get a good idea on the size of an object by raising the coil while swinging it over the target. A coin sized object should fade out at around 12 inches. A tin can will continue to give a strong signal at 2 feet. After you put in some time on this detector, you will get pretty good at guessing the size of a target.

Below is a link to a video to help with determining the size with the Garrett AT Pro.
