Depth question.. GT..

How does the GT compare in depth capabilitiies with an SE Pro ??

i bought a new SE Pro in Jan this year and see no diff in depth from my Elite or GT..sold the SE.

There are some who say it's just as deep as an Etrac or SE Pro, and that the GT gives more solid ID at depth. For me in my soil the GT is deeper than my Explorers were. Some even say the Sovereign runs more stabile and with better ID in certain soils.

The big thing here is how well you know the detector in both cases. I feel I get great depth with my GT and seen it will go super deep and ID well too at some of these depth, but it is because I know my GT. Now I have used all the different Explorers and do have a E-Trac too right now and will say I have went as deep with the Explorer as I have with my GT, but had to dig many iffy signals and more trash with the Explorer. Now the E-Trac I seem to dig less trash than the Explorer, better in iron trash and can separate targets better, so this is the one that could do better for me than my GT once I spend the time to really know it well.
Now I have a hunting Buddie James(ND) that never used a Sovereign ,but only used a Explorer and spent the time to really know it well and we have compared signal many times and he has got signals from deep coins I couldn't with the Sovereign, so I feel if you know the Explorer well there maybe a slight depth advantage, but for ease of use the GT wins hands down in my opinion. One thing more in a area where James and another guy worked hard at a old fairgrounds with their Explorers I was able to get 2 merc and 3 Wheaties while just walking across it with my GT swinging the coil on the way to the car, so those slight tone changes maybe easier to hear on the GT.
The Sovereigns, Explorers and the E-Tracs are all great detectors and some preferred one over the other, but it is how well you get to know it as to how well you will do.

I agree, I also find that once you get to know your machine and have confidence in its abilities the sky is the limit. I LOVE my GT. It has already proved itself awesome and Iv only been out about 4 times so far this year. Idon't plan on replacing it anytime soon.

I'm expecting good things from the GT from what I read. I'm used to a F75 and T2.. so it will be different for sure.
My hope is it works well in iron invested areas..with some decent depth on coins.

Ive got an F75 Elton and really like the all metal motion mode on it, gives a great feel on targets and ground.

Rick, when comparing the targets with the Explorer what sized coils were you guys using? My Explorers with 10" coil were never as deep as my GT with 10" coil, and so far the 12x10 seems even deeper.

How much more depth do you feel it gets you? 2" or more, or less..on an average. Two inches would be a lot in my opinon allowing one to get a different level of finds.

Do you find yourself using the smaller coil a lot, or does the DD down the middle on 10" coil work pretty well in junk invested areas.

James had the stock coil on his Explorer XS while I was trying out a 12 inch coil on my Sovereign XS2 in a old park, James was able to get a signal on a barber dime I didn't get a dig-able signal. On the old fairground where I picked up the coins he missed I was using the GT with the stock coil 10 inch Tornado coil while he was using his XS with a coil off a EX II.
From my own experience with the Sovereign and the Explorer the deepest I dug is the same using a Sun Ray 12 inch coil on both detectors. I feel it all comes down to how well you know the detector as i have seen what the Explorer can do in Jame's hands as he is awesome with his Explorer and knows it well. I also feel this is why I do so good with my Sovereigns in well worked area as I know what it is telling me even though I am very hard of hearing I can still hear what i need to though my Timberwolf headphones.
From my use of all the Sovereigns the XS with the 8 inch coinsearch coil is the easiest to use and understand while the GT is the most powerful of the Sovereigns. Coil wise I never tried the 12X10 yet and hope to some day, but know the S-12 is a great one, the S-8 is too along with the older 8 inch coinsearch and the 10 inch Tornado that Minelab make is also great. I did a field test on a 8 inch, 10 inch and 12 inch concentric coils for a company on 2 of my Sovereigns (XS2 and the GT) and was very impressed with the 8 and the 12 and did pick up many coins my Explorer missed in a trashy yard (still don't know how I missed them with my Explorer and different coils), but they never made the coils as they didn't think there would be a great demand to make it worth while being everyone was talking Explorers. I tried a 8 inch Concentric of another brand, but thought it was bad so sent it back for another and it too didn't do much for me.

That or the Sunray you spoke of in a different post has my interest for sure. Does Sunray still sell them new (8" coil" )

So far I can't say for sure but the 12x10 does seem deeper. I've popped a lot of deep wheats at spots I had worked with the stock 10" coil as well as my Explorers. If you read my big 12x10 thread I also did some testing of the stock 10" Tornado and the 12x10 on a buried dime and not only did the 12x10 give a good ID easier, but I also lowered the sensitivity to where the 12x10 could just barely produce the proper ID and then threw the stock coil on without changing sensitivity and it could not give a good response. This tells me the 12x10 is getting deeper even with the same setting. I also find I can run sensitivty higher with this coil at some sites so it should equal more depth. I have more tests to run to prove this for myself more this spring. The stock coil is excellent at seperation but the 12x10 is even better at it width wise. The S-5 I have used maybe 7 times or so thus far and have got one silver dime out of the trash with it.

Two factors that might have made the difference...The 12" coil was seeing too much ground matrix or being masked by nearby iron, or the fact that you were using a XS2 where as some say the GT gets a bit deeper.

I remember Crazyman saying an 8" coil gets him more depth or at least better ID at depth than the 10" coil due to his high minerals and I know from my own experience with various machines that bad soil can cause better depth/ID with a smaller coil. One example is that the 15x12 didn't get as good of depth for me on land (though it did at the beach) than the stock coil. The 12x10 SEF coil I feel sees less ground width wise than the stock coil and so doesn't wash in the ground matrix as much and gets better depth than stock where as a 12" conventional coil might not in high minerals due to seeing more ground.

I'm tempted to try a 8" coil in my high minerals as there is a chance it might get deeper than the stock coil. Which of the 8" coils do you guys feel is the deepest?

One of your favorites isn't it ?? Send me some secrets my friend...
