DEPTH ON 305 STINKS

Been finding a lot of coins at 2 and 3 inches, thought I would bury a wheat penny flat at 5.5 inches and see if I could get a signal. Nothing. Surely a Minelab X-terra 305 should be able to find that, huh?
Tried different settings sens. gb ect. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Denny

I am just learning w/ my 305..I just got it a few days ago...I must say that I have dug wheats at 7. So what is the diff? I was disappointed at first when I was trying to gb/sens and stuff..so I just turned it on and let it go through the start up while holding the coin in the air...after that I set desc on 2 and away I go...I have had wonderful luck after that...As for now I am gonna run like that b/c thats working for me fantastically!
Sorry I couldn't give you any pointers on the machine itself but I figured I would put in my 2cents,as we learn more we should share with each other

What is your ground balance number? Is your ground highly mineralized? Could be many different things , could be you got a faulty machine.

If your ground is heavily mineralized... you will more than likely need a DD coil to get decent depth and accurate target ID from most detectors. I'm having a problem due to my badly mineralized ground (GBing between 6 to 10 on my X-Terra 705) so I ordered a 10.5" MF DD Coil to cut through the minerals. The lower the GB #'s .. the higher the ground mineralization.

We tried several different sens and ground balance numbers, when I turn the sens all the way up it will chirp very slightly. Minerals aren't bad here in NW Ohio.

oh I figured that :wiggle:

if that wheat were in the ground for 50 yrs I bet you'd get it no problem, freshly buried coins don't detect as well.

Well what IS the machine auto GBing at? I'm just curious. I can turn sense all the way up to 28 here without chatter in this bad ground here in Oregon even though I'm GBing at 10.

Factory setting for sens is 6 and the max is ten I think. He raised his sens and seems to be doing better. Thanks for all the input.

I know you say you tried several GB numbers. But did you GB over a clean spot like the manual says? Just picking some numbers isn't properly setting the GB. Once the GB is set then run the sens up until it starts to chatter then back it down one or two. How was your coil technique? Low and level? I'm just throwing it out there......

Hello all, I am having the same issue (just got my 305 today) I can't get the GB stuff figured out and I can't pick up coins more than 2-3inches down. What am I supposed to be hearing during Ground Balance? I double whah whah or a single one? Does anyone know?

Thanks in advance,

Watch the videos on the faq faq post at top of page. You want the tone to meet in the middle , trying to make the tone as silent as possible. Air test it by laying your detector on a table take a peice of paper and mark off 12 inches marking every inch. Now wave a coin under the coin and see how it many inches it will detect at. Itshould air test at about 10 inches or more . And you should get coins in the ground at about 6inches average.

Thanks again 7cents. Now why didn't they send a DVD with the detector so I could understand how to properly GB the machine? :detecting: Thank you! That was a BIG help!

There are two tones associated with manual ground balance. A high tone and a low tone. If, while lowering and raising your coil from about an inch above the ground, (making sure there is nothing metal under the coil) to about 6 inches above the ground, you hear the high pitched tone, you have your detector adjusted with too much negative ground phase. To compensate for that, keep bobbing the coil and press on the - keypad. If you keep bobbing and clicking on the negative key pad, you'll eventually get to where the tone is low pitched. When that happens, you've ground balanced with too much positive ground phase. So back it off by pressing the + keypad until you hear a blending of those two tones. High and low. In most situations, you won't be able to GB to a point where the tone disappears. Just a spot where the two tones blend together. I'm in the process of making a series of videos that will hopefully help folks better understand their X-TERRA. The videos are based on my article (located in FAQFAQ) and I'll post the links to those videos as soon as they are complete. HH Randy

Unlike some detectors that you manually ground balance the Xterras dont always go silent when their ground balanced properly, you will hear faint chatter. you need to find the" happy medium" the point where neg. and pos. dont cancel each other out, they blend together. I always set my sens. to 18-20 on my 505, then set to all metal and find a place where I get no target signal and then ground balance. I admit it took me some time to master this now its a snap. If you continue to have problems just remember every day people buy new products that are defective in some way right from the factory, thats why companies cover their good name with a warranty.
