Looks like an interesting plug-in ... although many of these effects could be done by skillful use of masks, filters and adjustment layers. Of course, if it speeds up and/or simplifies the process it could have value for many folks.

I agree, Gord-about the use of masks, layers, etc. That's why I like this plug so much. Less time, excellent results and a fairly short learning curve. For those of us who are just plain lazy, you can use presets (works okay, but not great on some) or create a map via the preformentioned prcesses. I have played with over 500 plug-ins (most not too successfully), so I try to whittle it down to the ones I like and are the simplest to use. FOD gen. is one of them. I also really like alien skins' plugs and some older plugs-can't remember-Gregs, maybe? What are your plugs of choice? What do you do? I play more than anything with photoshop. But I also really like some stand alones like face on body and fantamorph. I morphed my wife and I. Very easy, yet dramatic results. It is really cool!

Todd, from the look of it it works exactly the same way as Photoshop's own Lens Blur filter does. But Lens Blur filter, IMO, looks more realistic.
However, for Photoshop Elements or other compatible editors - why not?

But I am a little confused. DOF gen is used to clean-up unfocused background, not to blur it. The photos are "before and after", but backwards. The "after" photo is first. (the one where you can make out the detail is the finished product). The blurry background photo is the one that was taken by the camera w/no photoshop editing yet.

Hi Todd - I like playing around with photography but enjoy digital processing, etc as well. Don't use too many Photoshop plug-ins but not because they aren't worthwhile but rather due to the cost which can add up after awhile. I have used Virtual Photographer, Nik filters, etc in the past though.
I'm from an old school of Amiga computer graphic fanatics which had some amazing,affordable digital arts programs years before Windows and the Mac machines. Unfortunately it did not survive the battle with the big two. It gave me an appreciation for the many great graphics related activities that computers can help with and much pleasure along the way.

Amigas rocked. They really did. But I tell you, nothing seems to come close to the macs of today for images, movies and music. A buddy of mine has all the latest stuff, and it just blows me away. He produces music videos with his system.
As far as plug-ins go, there are tons of the older plug-ins that are now free, as they are so outdated. But most of them are filters-I haven't found very many free program plug-ins or whatever you call them, like Extensis Intellihance, etc.
