Depth of 8" coil vs 10"

Just to make this depth issue have a few more variables, how does the 8" coil compare to the 10" in depth. I've heard that the 8" is a little deeper on small targets but as we all know...you can't believe everything you read. I primarily hunt the wet sand so let's assume for this discussion that we are hunting "average" ocean wet sand which includes a little salt, black sand and whatever else may be in there.

IMHO The 10 inch Slimline coil is deeper than the 8 inch and most of the other coils in the field.HH Ron

But a small coil will hit better on things like thin gold chains in general. Don't know how well the 8" or S-5 5.5" coils will hit on thin chains as I haven't tried yet, but if it follows the norm for other machines I'd suspect it to have better sensitivity to them.

What's the difference between the Slimline and the Tornado?

The old BBS 10" coils were heavy and I hear not as good as the newer Tornado which comes with the GT. Same with the old 8" BBS versus the newer one, though I hear some like the 8" BBS coil for certain things. The white Coinsearch coil that came with older Sovereigns is probably the favorite among all the 8" coils for people, with maybe the S-8 or new Minelab 8" a close second if not a tie.

Depends on your ground conditions. In my mineralized ground they are about even on depth.I have to run my sensitivity at about 3:00 with the 10 inch to keep a decent threshold without a lot of falsing. With my S-8 I can run sensitivity at 12:00. I just recently tested my GT with the 10 inch and my Elite with the S-8 head to head on deep targets at an old park and depth was close with the deep signals being a little less iffy with the S-8.

More people should give the joey a look. It's light, sensitive, good in the trash and can be run at high sensitivity settings without falsing.I would nit take mine off the machine now....love it.

Crazyman, can't wait to hear your reports on those tests!

Some highly mineralized ground or containing lots of iron will give better depth with a smaller coil than a larger one. The only way to find out is to stick a coin in the ground and then sweep over it with a large and small coil. The small coil might run at higher sensitivity, see less ground signal or iron, and so get deeper on coins or at least clean up the signals better. This isn't as critical on FBS/BBS machines as with others but it still holds true for the most part.
