Depth of 705

Hi all,I read with interest all the stories and articles on this great site, but I have a problem although I have found around 250 coins both old and modern in the last 3 months none of them have been deeper than 4-6 inches.I know there are deeper targets as the areas I am in are over 100 years old and the ground has been altered in places,I also have the same problem at the beach on dry sand.I have read the faq;s many times and have set the sensitivity/gb/theshold etc as per info>The ground here is sandy-soil with no rocks etc.Any help would be appreciated.....thanks

I'm not a hundred percent on what you are asking John, but most coins are usually in the top 6 inches. If there have been extra layers of soil added, then they could be deeper. Your standard coil will be as deep as any other coil avaiable for the X-Terra's. What you can do if you want more depth, is use the prospecting mode. You will get possibly 50% more depth but there will be no discrimination but you can set your iron mask up to the max so you don't have to dig iron.

I think Mick is spot-on with his statement that most coins are in the top 6 inches. I'd venture to say in my 38+ years of detecting, at least 95% of those I've found are within that range. However, with that other 5% being deeper based on some that I've dug, I am confident that the X-TERRA is capable of digging dimes and pennies at 8 inches, quarters 11-12 inches and lead slugs even deeper. Part of your statement says a "mouthful" when you said there are deeper targets in the areas you are hunting. That key word being "targets". If you are pulling non-coin targets at depths of more than 6-inches, rest assured that you will find coins at those depths as well (if they are there) and you have your detector set up properly. If your soil has magnetic mineralization, don't be afraid to run with a positive GB. That means finding the proper GB and lowering the setting by a couple clicks. It will cause a little falsing. But I'm convinced it increases the depth of detection.
Next time you go out hunting, run with little or no discrimination. Dig some of those targets that you suspect will not be coins, just to build your confidence on finding deeper targets. I think you will prove to yourself that the X-TERRA is capable of much more depth that 6 inches. And know that if they had been coins, you would have found them. As a side note, I firmly believe that the majority of coins still hiding out there is due to target masking instead of extreme depth. Once you master the art of working the coil, (sweep speed, direction) and listening for the subtle change of tones, you'll be surprised at some of the things you'll pull out of the ground. Thanks for the help, maybe I had better explain, the area I have been finding coins etc in has now had the top 4 or so inches removed by earthmovers, hence I am finding more coins under the origonal layer of earth.Maybe I am expecting to much but when I read of you guys finding coins etc in deep deep holes i have to wonder what I am doing wrong, yeah I have set up the gb by lowering it a tad
Dont get me wrong I am not complaining, detecting is relatively new in NZ I have only ever seen 2 or 3 other md,ers. So the only contact or info available is through this forum.............thanks again

I have been hunting a site which had the houses demolished. What they did with some of the debri, was dozed it out over an acre or so. I have found coins at depths to about 6"(?). The problem for me is that the few old coins have been as deep as the modern. While that isn't so bad, what is bad is that I know from hunting in a no disc. pattern that the volume of iron will not let me find the deeper targets over a substantial portion of the property. The Iron and other non ferous are often shollow. I believe that without digging all the nails and other trash I will recover very few of the old coins, and the old coins are why I got into this hobby.

I am considering an Explorer or an Etrak for places like this, as I hunt a couple like it. They have been reported to "see through" iron.

I guess my point is that most of the time a machine will not "see" past the 1st target. What does help me is to run a DD coil. There are several available, and all have their strong suits. The big 7.5khz DD discs out iron well. The 18.75khz 6" round DD and 5 x 10 DD have GREAT seperation but like the iron.
