depth not accurate

hello folks I know there probably has been some post about this. my ctx 3030 will not accurately id depth , I had all kinds ground condition , wet, dry, hot , netural , I dig lots of civil war minnies. say I dig one that is 4 inches it will display 11. it is never accurate on anything actually . other than that I love this machine.

The VDI is calibrated for coin sized objects. Depth will be off. Although, 11" on a 4" mini ball doesn't sound right

Out of curiosity I just tested a .58 caliber 3 ring mini ball and the CTX was dead on at 4"

To get a accurate reading the coil must be swept over the center of target in your normal mode and stopped then look at the display before you go to pinpoint . sube

I didn't think I had a problem depth accuracy, until I put on my 17" coil, now its way off. I've found it to be more accurate when pinpointing though. Not sure what's up with the big coil but I go to great pains to establish being over TV's target center and mines still off. Wish I had an answer.

McClod, I should have the 17" in my grip by next Thursday.

****Thanks Bart!!***

We can line up a play date and compare notes.

Make sure that you are displaying depth in inches and not cm....wildherre

I have had several machines in my short detecting carrier and without a doubt the CTX is the best I have used unto you get to depth accuracy and in that respect it it by far the worse.
Peroid

The 17" coil is way off on depth that is the main reason why I got rid of it. It will display 4" when the actual target is 1-2". Its reverse of what you think it should be. I would think a larger coil would give a more amplified target showing less depth than the actual, but with the CTX its the other way around

I use a 17 inch coil and love it in the fields , I actually haven't used the stock coil probably 30 minutes I will swap back and see about depth on it , I do run my sensitivity pretty high tho , I will reduce sen, and try that too.

I rarely care what the depth indicator says. I am hunting fields with the 17 incher, places that a large cents can be either a foot deep or on the surface.. Of course it matters more to park and yard hunters.

In my experience and soil here in Syracuse the 17" can be really accurate at some spots and horrible at others. It is pretty bad with the shallow targets, but after 5-6 inches it can be accurate. I can usually tell by the sound anyway if it is a good deep target. I have learned that if it is saying 9-11 inches but the pinpoint is a little loud, it is probably just a really small target at about 5 inches. Those nice deep targets sometimes wont even make a sound in pinpoint unless I press down slightly on ground. Alot of times I will switch over to a TTF program to verify-works great.

I hunt almost always with the 6" coil on demo lots. Lots of trash and I use manual sense at about 25-28. I run GH's program with a backup program of the stock 'coin' program. When I get a target in the GH program I then check the depth with the stock coin program. For whatever reason the high sensitivity doesnt seem to effect the stock coin depth accuracy. Anyway I have a male machine and as we all know it lies about depth!

Ha....

Just like Silverchef said. It's all in the pinpoint sound.. I run really high manual sensitivity (28-30) and my depth jumps from 2-12 inches and all numbers in between... I just got my 17" on Friday and played all weekend with it :) I had no problems with the depth? (Find the target, pinpoint as close as possible to the center of the minelab logo then wiggle over it for a correct depth reading) This worked great for me.

Sounds good to me INSAYN! Congrats on your new toys! Hopefully we can get a hunt together going before long and compare notes. I really like my 17, and it has actually been an advantage when swinging over longer grass as the extra weight helps to just lay that grass over better than my 11 which would often snag or bind up in it leaving me stopped in my track and off balance....occasionally.
