Depth meter way off?

Has anyone ever run into faulty depth readings? I could not figure out why I never find things more than four plus inches deep with my CXIII so I did a field test yesterday and found that many of my finds were much deeper than four inches.

I took a tape measure, along with a dime, a quarter and a Kennedy Half.

My first test was with a dime at four inches. It detected the dime fine, but read 2++ inches. The dime at deeper levels than that was difficult to detect with the 8.5" coil.

My next test was a quarter at seven inches, once again it detected the quarter fine, but said four inches. It was difficult to detect the quarter deeper than that.

The half had similar results, again at nine inches the detector said four ++ inches.

I am not unhappy with the depth reached given the current dry soil conditions, however I wonder how many targets I may have left behind thinking that it must have been something much larger than a coin, such as a can.

Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?

I think those depth readouts are just a general indication. Once you get to know your machine, hearing the tones and reading the conductivity already gives you a general idea of the depth. Unsure if its large? Continue waving that coil back and forth over the target while raising it. If you are still getting a strong signal at 14 inches, it's an over sized target.

Spoke to Mary at Garrett. She advised turning off Treasure Talk. I will try it, maybe the visual is more accurate.
