Depth Loss with the 8" coil???

I'm wondering what you guys think the loss in depth would be between the 8" stock coil and the 10"(or is it 10.5"???)stock coil....I got mine today and think it might help in the trash areas until I'm more experienced with the Explorer....but I don't want to sacrific the depth unless I must....I'm not getting much depth as it is. Most of my silver finds have been shallow. Some of my clad has been deeper.

I think in perfect conditions the stock coil will get 3 to 4 inches deeper, however in extremely adverse conditiond the 8 can get deeper just by the fact it can see stuff the bigger coil might not, so your really not sacrificing depth, your gaining it.....

Am a newbie with my Explorer XS, but here's what I found tonight. We have approx 4 inches of snow....took out the Explorer this evening to my "coin garden".....it NAILED a Merc dime that is buried at exactly 5 inches. I was using the 8" loop and running on Smartfind...with sens bumped up a bit. A fluke??? I don't think so !! Hope this helps...Thanks..Jake

Steve -
My experience has been that you loose 2-3 inches on depth. Of the coils I own, the 8" also has the fewest recoveries of coins on edge (just 1 compared to 6 or 7 with the stock coil).
The news isn't all bad... It is indeed a lot easier to learn with, especially when it comes to pinpointing. I also have better luck in getting targets near iron that I might have missed otherwise. The Explorer is also a lot more comfortable, physically, to use with the smaller coil on the end of the stick.
So it is a mixed bag. Be careful not to get too fond of it - a lot of fellows get hooked on the 8" and never let it go. I spent a few painful weeks weening myself, in fact <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

It seems pretty much a dead heat. I havn't noticed any huge increase in depth but I have noticed an increase in finds (better coverage?)and it seems alot easer to swing.

I didnt use one long enough to see, I know I couldnt run the sensitivity as high as I could with the 10 and be stable..the snmaller the coil the more sens you can run, so I think that makes up for some of the depth loss
