depth indicator

had a question about the depth indicator but first I'd like to say this is a great forum and learned alot about the x-terras. I have owned my X-terra 70 for about 2 months and like it alot. My question is when ever I hit a good target the indicator will show deeper than what the target is. like a penny will show up as 3 arrows and the penny will end up being about 2" in the ground. just wandering if anybody else has had this problem or if my machine is defective. the depth indicator is no big deal to me but for what the 70 cost just would like to know if it should be more accurate.

My thoughts are that this may vary for the following reasons:

1. The soil/ground you are in.
2. How high sensitivity is set.
3. Don't forget to subtract the one inch coil height that you should be maintaining over the ground.

I have never really made an effort to test the accuracy, but have kind of adopted the rule of thumb that each arrow = about 2 inches. May I suggest that you do an air test with the same coin and see what it reads. And if you hunt various places, bury the coin a measured depth and check it. I would also bury it in loose soil and check, then really mash/compact it and re-check. I think this will give you a chance to learn more about the machine, and then you can come back to the forum and we'll then learn from your experience. Also let us know what coil you are using as there might be some variance based on frequency and size.

I just use the arrows as an approximate guideline for depth. Quite often the tone sound and volume will tell you more than the arrows.

I have noticed, though, that iron in the minus numbers always shows 4 or 5 Arrows, regardless of depth. Wonder Why??
