You can see the relatively newly planted sea oats, and sandcatcher fencing. The walkover is strictly an L-shaped ramp at this point in the reconstruction since last September....a good bit less elaborate than pre-Ivan, and it's much farther back.

I didn't get far out enough afterwards, but even as close as I am, I'm so much lower that the top of the gazebo pretty much can't be seen. The dune destruction in this pic is about half as dramatic as the surrounding properties, and most of the other walkovers are at least half trashed. Depending on what part of the beach you're looking at, I'd say there's anywhere from 4-10 feet of sand gone. The pilings that have appeared are upwards of 50-55 years old, by my best estimate. The apparent damage appears similar to post-Ivan but that's only because Ivan gave Dennis such a big head start. Ivan was definitely alot more vicious, particularly when it comes to the actual condos/hotels, and everything else on the barrier island. It was especially sad to see the Gulfarium (a 50 year old marine show aquarium) from the Gulf side the day after. Although I haven't heard reports of them losing any marine life, as they did with Ivan, the back is pretty banged up again, and that huge, shiny new fence is now mostly in the briny deep.
