Last summer we went to Mackinaw (pardon the spelling in this one) Island. But stopped at Fort Michlimack in Mackinaw City. Did the tourist thing and looked at the old light house and the fort. Ooohed and aahhed over the view of the lake yada yada yada :) while walking in the park towards the Fort I noticed alot of this signs all over. Seems the whole area is a Archological (?) Preserve and they dont want you digging up anything. Just for giggels I ask one of the Park caretakers what the penalty would be if someone ignored the signs (ya cant say "I didnt see the sign" as they're all over the place). He said it's a $2500.00 fine loss of your detector and 90 days in jail!! Well needless to say I almost had a accident I aint had since early childhood when he told me that. He also said it's the same on the Island to because of the Fort there. Glad my wife told me to leave it home.

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of! Where were you again, Communist China??????? I can't believe the ignorance of some of these places. Lets see, if its in the ground then no one knows it even exists, and no one would know if it was dug up, BUT WE BETTER PROTECT IT! From what. So a hobbyist digs an old coin or relic, then the history is preserved, then someone actually gives a crap about it. But if it remains in the ground then no one wins. It is lost forever. Like the reasoning ability of some people. DO coins less than 200 years old even qualify as needing archaeological protection????

Brickdaddy, I totally agree with you on that aspect of if it's underground who's gonna know bout it. See now here's the really funny part about all this....They dont want YOU to dig it up cause their Archiologists wont be able to find them when they go to EXCAVATE the area looking for finds. Which is another thing that cracks me up. When I find a target I would dig a small plug and they plan to strip mine the damn place. Which we have yet to see that happen. Maybe they could sell permits to MD and have you Donate the finds to the museum. Then they would have extra money coming in for the museum or other things......Ok I think I've ranted enough for one day LOL

as long as they draw up a map showing the exact square inch something was found at, how deep it was & which way it was facing. So they have to imprison to maximize their income from this scam. I doubt tour groups would listen to the archaeologist about 1,000 common finds & exact square inch & depth found, etc.

In Texas, 2 men were detecting about 900 feet from a fort the feds demolished & had permission & artifacts hadn't been found that far out but a ranger said they were going to put them away so long they may never see daylight again. Out east, a couple people dug up half a dozen common Civil war bullets with a commercial value of under $3.00 total, but an "archaeological value" of $18,000 (what the archie would be paid to dig them up?), so they had to pay many thousands to run ads in local papers thst said turn in looters of our nation's priceless historical artifacts.

The problem is that maybe half the people in this hobby are current or former govt employees who don't dare criticize their current/former bosses/co-workers for fear of being fired or losing their pension. And Congress is mostly a bunch of crooks who say the Constitution no longer applies. HH if you dare, George (MN)
