Delta finds coin circa 1586-1635... in the US!!!

I am a bit at a loss for words. My good friend and I got out in the woods last night for a night hunt, the woods were glowing orange from his Coleman lantern... We found ourselves on an old road unexpectedly, which I headed up while he worked it slowly... I came to a ridge and decided that it might have been a nice picnic spot back in the day, as you would have been able to see water in the distance back when it was cleared... About 50 feet along the ridge I got an iffy tone that settled around 72 - thought I might have an Indian. When it came out of the soil I saw it was flat, and flipped it over expecting to see a button shank, and then there wasn't one. I called my friend over and he held up the lantern and blew the dirt off it... and we saw the design... It just *felt* old. We dug a few more items up there, and then headed home after taking in a few landmarks. Well, just ran the coin under water, no scrubbing, and was trying to make out the writing while my friend was researching online... He calls out, "Hey, is this it?' And there was the design on screen... a jetton (merchant coinage) from the mid 1500's. Holy S$#*!!! After looking at more images online, we finally got a 100% ID on the coin.... It is the Rose and Orb jetton of Nuremburg Master Hans Krauwinckel II, c.1586-1635! http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/493843 I'm so fortunate it's in good shape, due to good drainage and a very forgiving soil type... I just simply cannot believe I dug this way out in the middle of the woods, at night... It truly felt like finding treasure. I may never dig a more interesting, or older item in my life... who knows... But for now, here is the photo - It has certainly blown my mind, hope you'll all enjoy as well... Happy hunting to all...and never forget that you can find great things with a lower-end detector! Cheers, BB

Absolutely fantastic find for the U.S.
Could it possibly have been dropped by a Hessian soldier? Ahhh, the possibilities. Or perhaps the early pre-united states dutch settlers.

BB that is absolutely astonishing! To think that you would find something that old in the states is difficult to comprehend. The amazing history of something like this... imagining all the possible scenarios of how it came to be in that location, who owned it, what they were using it for. It just goes on and on and makes for a pretty fun day dream.

Amazing find my friend - way to go!!!

BB don't be shy about getting a story to Tek , its the kind everyone should read.

Now it could have been a hand - me- down .
But it could have been lost by a traveler of that time period and that gives me a chill.

PS if we had a banner you would be on it.

Thanks Gman - someone else actually recommended sending the story to Tek, so I did - we'll see what they have to say. Certainly good press for the Delta! Yes, could have been a hand-me down, but then again in this particular area of southern Maine where this was found, we had settlements in teh early 1600's on teh coast and French trappers inland in teh mid to late 1600's, so anything is possible. What is for sure is that this coin traveled across the sea on a wooden boat, in someone's pocket, and that just absolutely blows my mind. Galileo was doing astronomy and Shakespeare was writing plays when this was made... Crazy.

BB i here ya, im just a little south of you in Mass 1/2 my family worked at the shipyard , days gone by.
Been knocking on the early 1700s door and looking to bust it down one day . HH Mike

And to think on a night hunt, waaaay out in the boonies! how great is that?

Thanks Jim and thanks all... One last detail - the motto on the coin is "GOTES SEGEN MACHT REICH" - my friend's wife speaks German and so the next morning we asked her what is meant - she translated it to, "God's blessing makes us rich..." Truly, a special and almost magical find. Thanks again, BB
