Hey Roper, for salt beaches, I would not recommend the 1280. It falses a lot and does not get very good depth in my opinion. I would not pay more than 250-300 bucks for one these days, even if it is in good shape. I would sell you my old one if you would offer me $300 bucks and mine is in excellent shape.

I'm sure there are some 1280 users out there who will crucify me for my statements about the 1280. The machine has its place. I believe this place is fresh water and/or dry land. There are much better machines for salt water hunting in my book.

If you are seriously interested in salt water hunting, I would recommend and don't want to spend too much, I would either go with the White's Beach ID or the White's PI. Both are fairly low cost water machines. CZ-20 is also good but will run you more money. Excal is good too but even more expensive than CZ-20.

Just my two cents.

I agtee. I have a 1280 and it was great for diving the fresh water lakes however not great for the salt. For that i use the Excaliburs & EX2 .02

1280 has been one of the best freshwater units for years but does not perform well in wet salt sand....If you just basically hunt the beach including the wet salt sand A Sov. or land CZ will serve you well..If you actually go in the water an Excalibur or CZ20 water machine will serve you well..Heard some good reports on the M6 working well also in the above enviroment but the units mentioned above should serve you well...Have no experience with PI units but some fellows swear by them for saltwater....A good backup probably would be an older Sov. as you are already used to the Elite....

Roper, what others said is pretty much true.. I also
use a sov. elite with a s-12 coil on the N.C. Beaches
I first had a 1280x and found lots of stuff on my beaches,,
Its heavy unless hip mounted... The only place that
it was unstable for me was right in the 2-6" suds 1 ft. up in salt water its stable,, Hell of a machine for dry sand and all the way to water suds and hits "deep"
Get the 10 in coil if you can... I traded mine for a cz5 that i
also use as backup now.. Nice machine ,3 tones, and meter that your wife would like,,
If the 1280 is a really good price grab it*** you can go waist deep in the ocean all day and not worry....Peg Leg Red
