What boring!!! I musta read the wrong post then. I read it last night and never had time to reply.
It was very interesting to see what is classed as river diving over there. I am sure that if I was put into them conditions I would of bottled out. My ego aint big enough to even consider that sort of dive........... I would of just gone home and and got drunk instead. I would love to get over there and try some diving on the wrecks over there. My aunt lives next to Poppham beach in Maine so I might just manage it one day.
The river diving I am thinking about would be more like diving in a bath to you. I can't think of any river that would have more than a 2knots current and as for shipping......... Your 6 million tonner would be like having the hoover damn blocking a steam. The rivers round this way have not seen anything bigger than a 6 man rowing boat since the Vikings were raiding. As for depth I an thinking more in the way of 15 feet.
Your story has inspired me with an idea for the future though. I thought that the Thames as it passes through London would be out because of the tide. I suppose if I dived on a good neap tide it would be down to about 6 or 7 knots. In that river............ You are talking about the Mecca for diving detectorists. The vis will be very bad but you would probably just pick up the swords and roman statues and the such gefore you even start digging into the silt. It is dredged pretty regular as well so it shouldn't be too bad with silt.
I have never detected underwater yet and it may not be until next year until I am ready to give it a go. I will be starting a course in the next couple of weeks just to get back into it. A long time since I dived and would feel a lot safer if I do a refresher first.
Royal if I get a chance to write out a story may I put it into your section??? I got a very nice find a few years back which may be of interest to you guys.
Cheers Craig.
