Deleon

How come no one ever talks about this machine? I almost had one but it didn't pan out. I would like to hear what people think about their Deleons.

Thanks,

Dan

Too bad Dan, was waiting for your hunting reports with the Deleon.

Yeah, I was pretty disappointed. I waited a month for it to be delivered, but all I got was excuses of how the post office screwed up, over and over. It was all within Ontario and I've never seen Canada Post mess up like that. I was lucky I got my money refunded through Paypal. I think the seller was hoping I would keep waiting until my 45 day grace period expired. He offered to ship it over night at his expense, but that was the 2nd (or 3rd) promise to do that. Maybe it was an honest series of mishaps, but I bailed while I still could.

I took the wife to the Casino on her birthday last weekend, and I walked away with enough to buy a Deleon brand new. Yeah, I suppose I could use the money to feed the kids or something silly like that, but I have it pegged for a new detector. Problem is, at $509 for a new one, there are some other choices (like the MX5). I'm trying my best to wait until Tesoro announces their new release, but this money is burning a hole in my pocket!

I'd love to hear amazing stories of success with the Deleon so I don't stray elsewhere.

Dan

Keep that money for now! Just look at the Eurotek Pro and the low price, etc. Yeah, it's close to Christmas and I'm betting there'll be something to entice you then.

I am not familiar with the Deleon, but isn't it a somewhat neutered Cortes? I would think if you liked the Cortes you would like the Deleon?

Both get really good depth.

Had a Deleon and really liked it was able to hit dimes at 5-6" and one penny that was around 7-8" using my Lesche digger as a way to measure the hole depth. The only reason I got rid of it was I wanted a TID detector that had tones and notch, hoping the new detector is going to let me buy another Tesoro if not think I'm going to give the Xterra 705 a shot.

Just did a hunt today with my Deleon. It is the only detector I currently own. I have had several Tesoros Vaquero, Silver Saber uMax, Golden uMax, Compadre. The Deleon is by far my favorite. It is deeper than any of the ones I have owned exept for the Vaquero. The V beats it but not by much. The Deleon will air test my wedding band at about 9 inches and I have dug some deep targets with it.
I don't need the notch feature that the Cortes has because I just use my display as a notch. I just keep it just above iron and only dig the numbers I like. I have learned the read the information that the target numerical id, the bar graph segment, and the sound together to effectively dig mostly good targets.
As for sound, I have learned that if you set the disc just above iron most all the can slaw and foil will have a scratchy clipped tone if you slow down over them , however the women's rings still sound good. Coins always sound good and hit hard but you have to pay attention not to miss the deep ones. Any time I get a 95 on the display and it is small its usually a coin.
This machine separate's good even with the 9x8 coil on it. If I had to give it any negative marks it would be for not having a back light. I really wish it had one. I was tempted to trade up to a Cortes just for the back light but I really don't think I would like the small readout on the Cortes. Hope this helps I really like this machine. Oh yeah, todays hunt, 10 pennies, one nickel and a 1968 dog tag, and not much trash at all.

Wheatymike, the way you use the Deleon, you'd be better off keeping it rather than getting the Cortes. The screen is much easier to read on the Deleon even without the back light. It just amazes me how deep the Deleon and Cortes are.

The screen size was my biggest concern with my Cortes purchase, I currently have to use reading glasses with a 1.25 magnification for nearly all but the larger font sizes. Lucky for me, the control box distance is far enough away that I have no problem reading the display.

The Deleon is a fine machine. I have had one for many years and it has found a lot of stuff.........including my first gold ring!!!! It is the detector that really got me "hooked" on this hobby.

I've been swinging one for several years. Of all the detectors in my arsenal, it is pretty much my favorite. Only serious down side IMO is the preset ground balance issue which isn't a problem for me as nearly all the locations I hunt are mild soils. As others have mentioned, the depth is surprisingly good and the ID is as accurate as any I've seen on other TID machines.

BarberBill you are right the ID is accurate. The numbers do jump around some but If you use them in conjunction with the bar graph you get some accurate info. For instance, if the numbers are between about 25-38 and the bar graph is hitting hard on nickel it usually is a nickel. If the nickel bar is hitting hard but the numbers are around 35-40ish its probably a square tab. Intact round tabs are always between 40-60ish.

I have learned to use the ID to my advantage. Just the other day I had a chance to hunt a 1800's house that was being torn down. A man had already cherry picked it and got some good silver coins so I hunted the spot he did. There were no 95's to be had, however I discovered that some deeper crusty wheat pennies were coming in around the zinc range. (70-79) So I ended up with 11 wheat pennies just digging those numbers. Also I scored a Indian penny that came in at about 68.

The id on my machine usually locks on pretty stable at the depths most coins are found, so I tend to use the target blocks more than the numbers. I've also found that the display is a bit more stable if I run the sensitivity in the 7 - 9 range and it still gets very good depth.

BarberBill That's good to know about the sensitivity. I will have to force myself to try that. :) I am bad about trying to run her wide open.
