Deleon?

John (Ma)

New member
Anyone using the Deleon? I live in Massachussetts and have been looking at some of the high end detectors, but keep getting drawn back to the Deleon for price, durability and Tesoro's great support. I would like to find more old silver as I hunt parks cellar holes, fields, etc. I would appreciate opinions and real experiences. I know this detector does not have a ground balance and am not sure if that would pose any issues. Thanks!

I have some interest in this detector too. What kind of depth are you guys getting on coins? Will it get deeper than my silver umax? I have mild soil so the ground balance is not an issue. When I set the ground balance on my Tiger Shark at the places I hunt I only have to adjust the ground balance very little from place to place, less than 1/8 of a turn.

I have a DeLeon which works very well in the parks etc. I usually detect. (mild ground) I've retrieved coins down to 6" in areas that don't seem to have much, in deeper targets. In air tests I've found that this particular D has 2 inches or so more depth than my other umax detectors. The display is pretty accurate, at least as good as any others I've been around. All in all it's been good to me and I really enjoy using it.

Remember, these are just my personal opinions and, while I know some folks figure I am just always negative about the Tesoro DeLe

John (MA),

...My wife bought herself a new Deleon last year for $510 shipped, not a bad price for a decent TID machine. She could not handle the weight of her old Toltec ll anymore and kinda got out of the hobby for awhile. The Deleon with the 5.75 concentric coil is similar in weight to my Bandido ll

I have to agree with Monte on a TDI in a trashy park, it would be best utilized by putting duct tape over it. I currently don't own a TDI but could just imagine what it would be doing in some of the real trashy areas I hunt. I get the TDI bug once in awhile, but then someone like Monte brings me back to reality. I have gotten pretty good at the Tesoro language on my Silver and Tiger and think I am gonna stick with a Outlaw or Vaquero. I just can't seem to get away from Tesoro products.

I currently run a MXT and have a silver umax as well. I have owned the Tejon and loved it and owned the Vaquero and after using the Tejon was not as impressed with. but with the high frequency of the Tejon I was never sure if I was leaving silver behind. I had an etrac for a while and sold it for the MXT. I am now considering the Whites V3i or etrac again now that I have more time. Just there cost and what appears to be science to run them I was curious on the Deleon. Maybe, I am getting caught up in all of the hype, I don't know.

I have some older parks I want to try that have probably been hit before and hoping to pull some silver. The etrac was good for silver, but there were so many tones and number combinations that I would get confused as I could only hunt on occassion. $1500 is a lot of dough, LOL

Thank you for all of your input and Monty for such a long detailed opinion, I appreciate it.

As I mentioned above, the DeLeon works well in my ground. Mineralization is the biggest bugaboo as Monte mentions. I don't have a big problem in trash areas with TID as I go by sound as much or more than the detector's indication having come from a lot of time on basic beep and dig machines. Just my two bits again.

I had the Deleon and currently have the Cortes. Loved the Deleon because of the Display but I can not dig every target nor can anyone else here. I don't care who they may think they are fooling you can not dig every target. Sometimes you just get tired of digging ify targets and the Deleon is great at cherry picking. I use the Cortes because of the Notch and I hate the small display but until Tesoro fixes this problem out of all the Detectors I have used, I like the Cortes best. TID is more accurate than the others I have used and it jumps around a lot but after a few days using it, you learn what that means.

I completely agree. I do more trash digging than most people would ever think of doing, but there is a limit.

I think a lot of those posters who say they dig everything do more posting than they do digging.:) Some location you can dig everything, but most you can't.

Yesterday, I found a 7 inch deep wheat penny with the Cortes using the narrow notch.

What is so amazing is spot where I found the wheat penny had been gone over with other high tech detectors at least a half dozen times.

Never use the wide notch, because you'll lose some depth on dimes, wheat pennies and quarters.

It's best to use the narrow notch instead and use the VDI numbers and bars to eliminate the zinc pennies and screw caps.

Also use the lowest discrimination setting you can or you'll lose depth on nickels. The Cortes produced the first nickel from this well hunted site with other detectors.

I was beginning to believe that no one lost any nickels at that site.

Another thing I like about the Cortes, it runs super quiet without a bunch chatter. Very peaceful.

Tabman I am ashamed of you. You are supposed to dig those Zincs. I can not resist them myself. I very rarely ever hunt in Wide notch and in Narrow my machine just does not like some Zincs. I have to remove the Notch to get a good pinpoint. I actually found a couple Nickels yesterday. I hunted an old Rental House and had to put up my Cortes and get out my old Golden Saber. I had to remove the top layer of coins before I could start looking for anything older. Dug about 50 coins in a couple of hours before I gave out. It will take a few trips to this House before the Cortes will be useful. The old Golden Saber just don't lie but it is not a depth monster for sure.

Like you, I almost always dig the zinc range. However, sometimes when I'm at a location that is loaded with screw caps and I'm on the prowl for old silver coins, I'll pass on most zinc range targets to avoid digging hundreds of screw caps. But If I get a hit in the zinc/screw cap range and it's soft and deep, I'm on it like duck on a June Bug.:)

I hate digging zincs almost as much a pull tabs. However, some small gold tids as zinc pennies so I still dig quite a few. Matter of fact, when I first learned this the second zinc I dug turned out to be a small, black hills gold ring. Wonder how much more I've missed?

the good fortune you have of hunting much milder ground than most of the places I go.

Good ground and a detector that works well can easily = success. Glad she likes it!
