Deleon with troy shadow 7"?

Stoof-tabsallday

Well-known member
So I was lucky enough to score a used deleon on te bay, but it doesn't have the stock coil. It has a troy shadow super 7" coil on it. Got it for half price of new and was a little worried about not having the warranty anymore, but I had my eye on this detector from the start so figured I'd pull the trigger. It's perfectly functioning and has a return policy so I'm not too worried about its function .
Just curious about anything I need to know about using this detector. Also if anyone happens to have experience with this combo or even just the coil because it's a coil I'm not familiar with.
Thanks all!!

The 7'' coil was actually made for Troy Galloway as was the original Troy machine by Tesoro,as they both use 5 pin coil connections they can be used and inter-change between the 2 machine, but only the Tesoro made machines, the X3 and X5 model being made by Fisher so as far as i understand those coils 'do not' work on the Tesoro based machine.

It is often thought that the 7'' Shadow coil was the best coil to use that is if you could find one, they seemed to be a higher quality and give better results,so you dont need to worry as you have about as good a combination as you will get,the 7'' coil is very rare and sort after to fit on the 5 pin coil connector machines,so dont worry as you have a quality combination.

I was tempted with that machine too....instead I got the fisher coinstrike with two coils.... Best of luck with your new machine i m sure it will rock with that 7" coil. I bet the deleon and Fisher coinstrike would have a good battle !

I only pulled the trigger because it was a good price.
Still a little sad that I don't have the warranty with it, but I'm sure it will last forever.

I am an owner of a Deleon, and have both the stock concentric coil, and the 10 inch Epsilon DD coil. The Deleon is very susceptible to EMI (stay well away from trains), and the DD is almost unusable around EMI of any sort. That being said, it's a great grab and go detector. It's lite weight, and fast. Aluminum will chime off like a coin, and it will do it quite derply. If I have a new site with reasonable EMI, it's the Deleon that I grab. If you have ground that is highly mineralized, then use a DD coil, otherwise go concentric. Of course, this is why I have multiple machines.

Tesoro Golden Saber
Tesoro Deleon
Fisher F5
Minelab 705

Thanks for the advice!!!
For right now all I have is the troy super 7 that's coming on it, but I may grab more coils in the future.
Hoping that the troy on it is either on part or better than the coil it comes with stock. No idea where the stock one is, I didn't ask him. I got a good deal, i think, so im not too worried. Plus one gent above said its a great coil for this machine. But I'm excited to try it out!!!

I have first hand experience with that coil and detector, best set up for the Deleon. My wife bought one a couple of years ago, the stock 9X8 concentric coil that it comes with is nothing to brag about. The stock 8" white donut that comes standard with the Outlaw is a superior coil IMHO. The Troy Super Seven coil is highly regarded and for good reason, it is a deep coil for it's size and has great separation in trashy environments.

Awesome!!! That makes me glad to hear that.
As long as the seller was honest about mechanical condition, it's a perfectly working deleon.
I'm thinking of contacting tesoro about the machine to find out date of manufacture and pricing in case I ever do have to send it in. Lifetime warranty only good for original owner, so it's a toss up whether the deal I got was better than buying new considering the warranty is gone, but they're great and highly regarded machines, so I'm doubting anything will break.... unless I break it by accident.
Thanks again!!

have tried two different Deleons and both were different they are good detectors and have there place EMI is a big problem with them now as for as the coil you have on it in my opinion it is one of the best coils there is it came standard on the Troy Shadow X2 I have the x2 as well as a new unused 7inch super7 coil for a backup and would never dream of selling it so my advise to you is keep it even if you decide to get another coil which the 8 inch white coil that comes with the outlaw is an excellent coil enjoy the Deleon HH

Thanks!!! I'll keep the white coil in mind!!

Would like to add that i have Troy Shadow super 9" coil permanently mounted on a Bandido 2 Umax . Awesome 1800s lumber camp coin finding combo.

Well it came in today. It's definitly been used quite a bit, but maybe that's a good sign?!?
I called tesoro to check on the serial number.
Date of purchase was 2003. Wow its 13 years old!!!
They assured me that it's the same as the model sold now.
I haven't had a chance to take it out yet, but I bench tested it and played with the controls. It's seems to be in great working order!!
I also asked their tech, considering what I paid and how old it was, if I should just return it and buy a new one....
He said that it doesn't matter how old it is. As long as it works properly there is no reason, and that I got a great deal and to enjoy it!!

So I ask you guys, for 290 and being that old with normal lower pole wear from collapsing it and minor scratching on middle pole ( Both replaceable) and besides the "aged color" of the box compared to my new compadre, and also considering the troy coil it came with, is this a keeper?
I have 10 days to decide.
I'm leaning hard towards keep it. But let me know your opinions please?
Also any specific ways I can test it to ensure its really in good working order. Thanks! !

I'll take that as its a good deal and I should keep it... lol

That would certainly be a machine that would be kept in my detecting arsenal, its a quality combination, just because a machine shows wear as long as it functions as it should do then this indicates that it is a preferred machine that has produced in the past, its a very sort after combination especially with that very hard too find Troy coil, dont change it just because its not got Tesoro printed on it.

Use it and the finds will come for sure.

Well gents, I did my full bench test and the detector seems to be functioning properly. Not sure I would really know if it didn't lol.
I did notice that 6" is about the max with air testing this machine. Seems kind of shallow, doesn't it?
We just got a freak snow fall and Temps have dropped here in the mitten, so I won't be able to field test it yet.
Does all this seem normal for this detector?
Thanks!

I'm not into doing air tests but yours sounds a little weak, may I ask your settings? Out of curiosity I put my wife's Deleon together and here are my settings:

......Coil used: Troy Shadow X-2... 7"
......Indoors with TV, computer, and other electrical devices.
......Sensitivity into the red boost zone without chatter.
......Disc. set to Minimum, the Deleon and other Tesoro's tend to lose depth at higher Disc. settings

Results:
....Clad Dime...8"
....Nickel....9"
...Normal sweep speed in direct center of coil, it was hot on the outside edge of the coil to within 6" away from coil

Edit to say: I don't run it this hot, it is a high gain and a very sensitive machine, I set the Disc. between Min. and Iron so that it picks up nickels with a solid hit. Sensitivity set between 7 & 9 according to the overloads I get. Then "raise the coil" will flash on the screen and it means what it says. You need to experiment with coil heights, usually 2 inches above the soil level works well. GL & HH

Settings are similar. I'm getting about the same as my compadre. A bit more actually. I didn't actually measure before but my hits are at about the same. I need to get it outside and give it a go!!! This weather sucks!!!
In all metal mode it goes nuts indoors lol.
It reads true when I test coins and iron on it, so I think it's working well.
I'll try it again with actual measurements.
Also will try outside. Still haven't been able to even take it out :-(
Thabks!
