Deleon Meter Readings

Help! I have now got my Deleon and I have used it for three hours total and found 22 zinc pennies, 1 clad dime, 4 clad quarters and some junk. I am having a really difficult time trying to figure out the bar readings and the numbers on the left. A lot of times I will get a reading of 85-95 and it will say silver coin and I dig it only to find a zinc penny. I have tried adjusting the discrim, and the sensitivty but it still doesn't seem to help. Tonight it kept saying silver coin 95 at 8 inches. I dug a flattened piece of copper pipe out of the ground between 8 and 9 inches! We measured with a ruler. One quarter was found at 5-6 inches again we measured and one was found at 8 inches, yes measured. So I am having some luck with the machine just can't figure the meter out. Thanks.

Anything in the high numbers will tend to be a coin, or silver or copper. These are the "good" metals for good coins. Don't get too hung up on the label of he bars for now. What seems to be important is the fullness of the bar. If it is smeared across the face of the bar readings I would seriously doubt that you have anything good. Tricky pieces of iron are exposed that way. You can also try lifting your coil up an inch or two. The manual points out that the best distance for disc is 4" to 8" from the coil, this seems to be true. Surface coins overload the machine quite easily, especially our Canadian 1 and 2 dollar coins, I wonder what a 1 dollar silver coin would do :).

I agree the zincers do read high quite often, oh well, they add up.

I have not yet tried hunting for any length of time with my sens over 3. This seems to be key in keeping the numbers and bars stable. Depth that I am getting seems consistant with your results.

I think that it is Monte who suggested putting a bag over the display for a while and learn the sound of the machine.

The numbers on the left, are your depth readings to a coin sized target.

Have fun with your Deleon , I am .

Going to take some time in the field to become proficient.
Many articles such as copper pipes, house siding pieces etc. will fool any machine and come in the high coin region, nature of the beast as all units will be fooled also.
A true Zinc coin will come in around 75 and show a bar graph of zinc.
Would feel your geting pennies from the 70's and 80's which I call high penny have a lot of copper in them and will fool any unit...
If the unit tells you to lift your coil simply do so as your looking at a shallow coin and lifting the coil will give an accurate ID and you will know the coin is just under the surface.read the manual a few more times and go out in the back yard and try your common coins laying on the ground raising the coil to simulate depth and this will get you started to better understand the bars, VDI numbers better..
Although a DeLeon is easy to set up some field time is required to become proficient. Good luck and must say its the most ergonmically perfect unit I ever used and one can hunt for many hours with little or no arm fatigue....

You were right it has taken me about a week of using the machine a few hours each day. It is so much fun though and I have never been anywhere where I haven't found anything. I know that day will come but so far I am very happy with the Deleon.

just make my statements and leave.

The biggest mistake I've ever made in 40 years of detecting was made the day I sold my Tesoro DeLeon. I found more coins and jewelry in one summer with that machine than I did the previous 5 years using other brands or models.

I listened to all the lies about the DeLeon being "outdated" and "shallow" and all the rest. This stuff caused me to lose faith in the DeLeon and I sold it.

I tried the Australian mega machines, Nautilus IIB's, and a bunch of others, and none produced like the DeLeon. The DeLeon is the best all-round coin/relic machine made today. And judging by the high prices ebay brings for used machines I can see the word has gotten out.

Now, about your problem. The readings you're getting are approximate readings meant to be averaged-out. You watch the meter with repeated swings and notice that the readings will go back and forth. These are called "patterns." After using the machine for a 100 hours or so you'll begins to recognize the various "patterns" for being certain targets.

Don't read any negative crap about the DeLeon. You must keep your mind tuned to its readings and not let yourself lose faith in it. It will fill your jars with coins if you trust it.

I just ordered a new Tejon myself but may also order another DeLeon too.

Good hunting and don't hunt my spots! :)
