DeLeon dis:shrug:apointing

Well I took the Deleon out for it's first trial run yesterday. I went to a park with lots of junk. The Deleon has what looks like a 9" coil on it. I am quessing it's the standard coil. The problem I had was jumping numbers everywhere. I have read many posts about turning the adjustments down so thats what I did. This was my first time out, maybe things will get better. I also received the Golden Umax last week. The Golden is my favorite detector right now. The Whites M6 and Fisher CZ3d follow close behind. I am not sure I really need four detectors. They just seem to show up some how. I maybe a detector addict.
The Deleon is currently at the bottom of the detector chain. I am going to get a 5.75 coil to try on the Deleon. Since the Golden and Deleon use the same coils I can always keep the 5.75 for the Golden in case the Deleon doesn't hang around. I have a small 4" coil that I put on the Deleon after I got home last night. It's a small but powerfull coil. I will give the 4" a try until I buy the 5.75.

When you get a signal with the Deleon, do you try to isolate the signal so that you get a better lock on with your ID? What I mean by this,I use short little SLOW sweeps over the target to get a better signal, and target ID. If you are using a broad sweep over a target, you may be picking up another target under your coil or the edge of a trash target. Try this...........when you get a signal, stop your swing and do a little slow wiggle over the target, and just try make the signal sound good and soild, then and only then refer to the target ID, depending on the site. If you are at a productive OLD sight, don't even refer to the target id meter, you never know what you may find in one of those areas, because pulltab readings can be great targets, you know, gold rings, military buttons, half dimes etc.

I second Hombre's comments. I hunt by the audio signals, then try to isolate the exact target and watch the ID. If you are getting a solid repeatable signal reading nickel, zinc p, or Silver (95) it's nearly always what the display says although the 95 may be a copper penny, dime, quarter etc.

95 numbers is a lot, so will jump around. We have only 9 Bars, and so more stable than the numbers. Even more stable is the catagories (NICKLE RING TAB). My Fisher ID edge has only 36 numbers and they jump around too. Uneven sweeps will cause the numbers to jump, but the bars should hold steady.

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions. I amgoing to try a smaller coil on the Deleon. The parks where I hunt have a lot of trash. I think the Deleon was just reading multiple targets under that 9" coil. Thanks again.

I hunt quite a bit with a 7" on mine and the 5.75" works well. With the 5.75 you'll want to swing a bit slower as it is really easy to swing past the target before you react.

A smaller coil will help in trashy areas...however, remember that the DeLeon is one powerful machine. not many frills, so those 8 AAs are sending a lot of juice to the coil....if where you're hunting has a lot of targets within 4" of the grass or top of the ground, sensitivity of between 2 and 4 is ample. If the numbers are jumping all over the place, then you're probably picking up multiple targets. Lifting the coil slightly and slowing the swing speed can help isolate individual targets, but dont raise and lower the coil while you are swinging..if you do raise the coil, do so at the end of you swing and bring it back at the new height. Raising the height of the coil from the ground mid-swing will confuse things even more. Give yourself and the DeLeon some time and I.m sure it will head to the top of your list.

A 9" coil on any machine is not going to work well in trashy area's, not to mention masking. It's not the unit, but the appropriate coil for the conditions that seems to be the problem. The Deleon hits fast, so you probably had lots of signals and ID attempts in a trashy area. I don't hunt lots of trashy area's (but have a Compadre with the 5.75" just for those spots) but love the standard coil for most hunting.
