deleon and the minelab x terra 50?:ausflag:

i have two tesoro detectors the vaquero and the compadre,i also have a minelab xt50 which was a showroom model bought cheap.at the time i was leaning towards a tesoro deleon,to keep it all in the family,so to speak.i have read a lot of good reports about both of them, and i was wondering what the forum thought about both machines.i know the xt50 has ground balance and the deleon doesn't.they both have a screen to tell you,. maybe, what you are going to find.i know digging it all finds more, but sometimes i like to know in advance what my possible target is?what are your thoughts? hh see ya blowfly

Hay Blowfly,

That's a good question. I have not used either one

of those machines. Mostly because they are about

around one pound heavier than the uMax housing of

your V and Compadre.

I do know that the xt50 has two frequencies that it can

operate at. It has the standard 7.5kHz or High 18.75kHz.

To achive the change in frequency, the coil must be changed.

That seems to be pretty neat to have one sensative to silver

and one to gold. I don't know if it would actually work that way.

But it would be neat if it did.

One problem with that is that the choice of coils is limited by

sizes and types. The high frequency only seems to be

available in DD. Where as, the Deleon has several choices.

Ground balancing would seem to be an advantage for the

xt50 in some cases.

At Metal Detector Reviews dot Net, the xt50 rated a score

of 3.7.

At Metal Detector Reviews dot Net, the Deleon rated a score

of 4.4.

The Deleon edges out the xt50 according to their reviewers.

They are so close. What is the answer?

I would like to know myself.

Happy Hunting,

Well anyone that has read any of my posts knows how much I like my DeLeon and the successes I have had with it. On the DeLeon the threshold is the ground balance per say the owners manuals definition of threshold states: Threshold: Continuous tone that establishes a reference point for tuning the detector to (ground balance it). The threshold tone also establishes the minimum sound level for deep targets in the discriminate mode. In Most areas I have my threshold cranked up high but others I have to back it off to reduce ground noise And The DeLeon does not have tone I.D. but there are subtle changes in tone that can be heard from different targets foil and can slaw a bit lower than silver or clad. I do not use headphones as i have been involved in a few run ins with aggressive drunks looking for hand outs and feel I would not be able to hear them approach. I have been using my DeLeon for 5 Yrs now and have learned how it reacts to most everything, but as you said the more you dig the more you find!.................. Keep Looking Down

Howdy phinbolt
I am not highjacking this thread, but I could'nt help but notice in your last post that you do not wear headphones for safety reasons. Have you ever tried the single earcup "stinger" made by Killer B's? I have a pair and think highly of them, as they let you hear your surroundings and what is in the ground. Detector Pro also makes some that are called "rattlers" Have a good'n.........Hombre

I don't mean to be obnoxious with this, but I beg to differ with Phinbolt. The DeLeon has two PRESET ground balances. One for the all metal and another for discriminate mode. The threshold setting has no effect on the actual ground balance, which as I just stated is factory preset. It serves a a minimum level of sound to judge target response against when hunting in all metal. The discrimination mode is silent. I've been using a DeLeon since the first of September with very good success and really like it. While it is a single tone machine, like all the Tesoros I've had any experience with, it has a subtle language that you soon learn that helps you recognize likely trash versus goodies etc. I haven't used mine in really minerlized ground as most of the places I hunt are mild. The DeLeon has worked very well for me here with good accuracy on the TID. I've found it's a fun machine to use. Don't have any experience with the Minelab for comparison, however.

thank you one and all for your responces. i have only seen a photo of a deleon, both barberbill and phinbolt have told me things i didn't know . the xt50 is an o.k.machine with the standard 7.5khz coil, but i had to waste money and bought 18.75 dd hf 5"by10"coil,which i have nicknamed, "the stab in the dark coil".people with steady hands wouldn't know what i was talking about. pin pointing is real fun! with it i have found less ,so i have gone back to the standard coil. using the v or c after a stint with the xt50 feels like you are floating . i never had to change hands with the v or c,after a couple of hours with the xt50 i've got to change hands before my arm falls off! the local dealer said he'll get in the 18.75 hf concentric and let me borrow it to see if it's better for me and may be do a swap,we'll see .hh see ya blowfly

i cant remember witch but either the cortes or the deleon coils will work with your V I believe its one or the other

sorry pulltab coils are not the issue here. i was wondering if anybody else had experiance with the two machines in question.with a little sideline reply to tabdog about xt50 and the the coils i've used.after this morning's hunt i am perfectly happy with the coils a they are on my vaquero and my compadre. hh see ya blowfly

[size=large]The Vaquero shares the same search coil selection as the Cibola, Tej

[size=large]I don't want to make the Minelab X-Terra 50 sound like a totally-superior model, so let me offer these grips I have had with the X-Terra's, or the X-T 50, from the get-go:

thanks monte,i appear to have made the right choice.this morning i found $11.45 in our coin and a nine carat gold man's wedding band that showed as 21 on screen.funny thing though my wifes 21 carat ring didn't register on the xt50 even with the sense maxed.the compadre nearly blew my ears off with no disc set, so maybe i'm hunting with the wrong machine,if i want to find jewellery? hh see ya blowfly

Did you try the high frequency coil on your wife's gold ring?

Maybe it will hit.
